Details of the Landmark Deal with Fairfax
Canada based Fairfax Financial Holdings will acquire the 60 point 72 percent stake in IDBI Bank for approximately 53,000 crore rupees, which is equivalent to about 5 point 5 billion dollars. This transaction represents the largest ever foreign investment in an Indian bank and serves as a critical milestone in the long awaited privatization process of the country's banking sector. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approved Fairfax's subsidiary, M/s 10955230 Canada Inc, as the strategic buyer. Under the terms of the agreement, this company will purchase the government's 30 point 48 percent stake for approximately 26,620 crore rupees and the Life Insurance Corporation of India's (LIC) 30 point 24 percent stake for approximately 26,440 crore rupees. According to an official statement, Fairfax, led by the renowned Canadian businessman Prem Watsa, will pay 81 rupees per share. This price is notably higher than the fair value of 75 rupees and 99 paise per share determined by two independent valuation agencies.
Historical Context and Government Vision
This massive deal in the banking sector is a significant achievement in the long standing efforts to privatize IDBI Bank and reduce government holdings in commercial enterprises. The process for this stake sale originally began in 2022. However, the sale process was temporarily halted earlier this year after financial bids remained below the reserve price, while finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman described the deal as a major milestone, stating that the government helped the bank recover from financial distress and is now accelerating its next phase of growth through the proposed restructuring while retaining a minority stake. The Finance Minister further emphasized that this move will strengthen India's banking system and help align banking services with global standards. She noted that this transaction confirms the strength of India's growth story, the resilience of its economy in the face of challenges, and the government's unwavering commitment to economic reforms.
