In a major step towards enhancing the combat capabilities of the Indian Air Force, the Government of India has officially issued a Letter of Request (LoR) to France for the acquisition of 114 Rafale multi-role fighter aircraft. This massive defense procurement is estimated to be worth approximately 3 lakh 25 thousand crore rupees. The development comes at a time when the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal AP Singh, is on an official visit to France, which began on June 1. This visit is strategically timed as both nations work towards finalizing one of the largest fighter jet deals in history.
Boosting Make in India and Strategic Autonomy
A defining feature of this proposed agreement is its alignment with the Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives. Out of the total 114 Rafale aircraft, 94 units are planned to be manufactured within India. This move is expected to Importantly strengthen the domestic aerospace manufacturing ecosystem, while while the initial set of aircraft will be delivered directly from France, the majority of the fleet will be produced locally through extensive technology transfer. The deal aims for a localization level of 55 to 60 percent, ensuring that Indian industries are deeply integrated into the production process of these advanced fighter jets.
Technical Specifications and Fleet Composition
The procurement plan for the 114 aircraft includes a mix of 88 single-seater jets and 26 twin-seater trainer versions. These aircraft will be equipped with state-of-the-art technology, including Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radars, advanced electronic warfare systems, and long-range missile capabilities. India has also specified several key requirements for the deal, such as the integration of indigenous weapons, the inclusion of Indian data links, and a comprehensive Transfer of Technology (ToT) covering engines, airframes, and avionics. This will ensure that the Rafale fleet is fully customized to meet the specific operational needs of the Indian Air Force.
Strategic Visit and Future Cooperation
During his visit to France, Air Chief Marshal AP Singh is scheduled to visit the facilities of Dassault Aviation, the manufacturer of the Rafale, as well as MBDA, whose missile systems are already in use across various Indian Air Force platforms. The discussions are expected to go beyond the immediate Rafale procurement, covering future defense cooperation, engine technology for the indigenous Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) program, and the overall strengthening of the India-France defense partnership. The project received its Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) from the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), chaired by the Defense Minister, in February 2026, marking it as a cornerstone of India's future defense strategy.
