India is taking a monumental step towards self-reliance in the electronics sector by initiating the domestic production of advanced Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs), while often referred to as the heart of electronic devices like mobile phones and computers, these circuit boards have historically been imported from abroad. However, a new manufacturing revolution is set to begin in Jewar, Uttar Pradesh, which will Notably reduce foreign dependency. Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, stated on Saturday that this indigenous production will save India approximately 40000 crore rupees in foreign exchange every year. This move marks a transition from simple assembly to deep manufacturing, positioning India as a global hub for high-tech components.

Ending Import Dependency and Boosting Exports

Currently, India stands as the sixth largest electronics exporter in the world. The government has set an ambitious target to leapfrog to the second position globally. Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasized that the Indian industry is no longer limited to just assembling parts; it's rapidly moving towards deep manufacturing, which involves creating the fundamental building blocks of technology. The PCB is the most critical component of any electronic device, serving as the foundation through which different parts of the device communicate. Under the Make in India initiative, the country will now produce highly advanced PCBs with 20 to 22 layers. Components that were previously sourced from international markets will now be manufactured locally for the entire world. This domestic production is expected to lower the overall manufacturing cost of electronic goods, providing long-term benefits to Indian consumers.

Jewar as the New Electronics Manufacturing Hub

To bring this vision to life, Jewar in Uttar Pradesh is being developed as a premier manufacturing hub. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently laid the foundation stone for a new Electronics Manufacturing Cluster in the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) area. A significant joint venture worth 3250 crore rupees has been formed between the contract manufacturer Amber Enterprises and the South Korean firm Korea Circuit (KCC). This state-of-the-art plant will focus on the mass production of High-Density Interconnect (HDI) PCBs, Flexible PCBs, and semiconductor substrates. Also, Amber Enterprises is investing another 3500 crore rupees to set up a separate large-scale plant on 100 acres of land. This second unit will primarily manufacture essential components for room air conditioners and copper clad laminates.

Employment Generation and Environmental Sustainability

The launch of these two mega projects is expected to not only strengthen India's technological prowess but also create significant employment opportunities at the local level. Initial estimates suggest that these factories will provide direct employment to approximately 3000 people. Beyond economic and industrial growth, the projects have been designed with a strong focus on environmental protection. According to Amber Enterprises, both manufacturing units are based on Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) technology, while this means that all water used in the factory will be completely recycled, ensuring that no liquid waste is discharged into the environment. By promoting sustainable manufacturing and the efficient use of resources, the government and private partners aim to ensure that this industrial leap doesn't have a negative impact on the environment in the future.
