Indian Air Force: The Ministry of Defence (MoD) of the Government of India on Thursday signed a landmark agreement with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) to procure 97 indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas Mk1A aircraft for the Indian Air Force. The total cost of this agreement is ₹62,370 crore (excluding taxes), and includes 68 single-seat fighter aircraft, 29 twin-seat trainer aircraft, and related equipment and support systems.
A Significant Step Towards a Self-Reliant IndiaThis agreement is a key component of the 'Make in India' and 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' initiatives. The Tejas Mk1A, a state-of-the-art indigenous fighter aircraft manufactured by HAL, will not only enhance the operational capabilities of the Indian Air Force but will also mark a milestone in India's global self-reliance in defense production. This project will promote indigenous technology and reduce India's dependence on foreign suppliers in the defense sector.
Enhanced Strength of the Indian Air ForceThe addition of the Tejas Mk1A to the fleet will provide the Indian Air Force with modern, fast, and reliable fighter aircraft. This aircraft will play a vital role in enhancing the Air Force's squadron strength, especially as the aging MiG-21 aircraft are being phased out. The Tejas Mk1A's advanced technology and performance capabilities will give the Air Force an edge in combat scenarios.
Boost to the Defense IndustryThis agreement will not only enhance the Air Force's firepower but also strengthen the domestic defense industry and its supply chain. HAL, as well as other Indian companies involved in the project, will receive technological and economic benefits. This agreement will also encourage small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), which play a vital role in defense production.
Advanced Features of the Tejas Mk1AThe Tejas Mk1A is the most advanced version of the indigenously designed and manufactured fighter aircraft. The aircraft will be equipped with the following state-of-the-art systems:
- Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar: High accuracy in target detection and tracking.
- Self-Defense Shield: Advanced systems for protection against enemy attacks.
- Control Surface Actuators: Improved control and maneuverability. The integration of these indigenous technologies is another step towards self-reliance. This aircraft will provide a potent platform to meet the operational requirements of the Indian Air Force.
