Iran has officially clarified that it currently has no plans to restart any form of dialogue with the United States, while this significant diplomatic stance was articulated by the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Esmaeil Baghaei, on Wednesday. Baghaei emphasized that the nation's entire focus is presently directed toward its own security and defense. This announcement comes at a critical juncture as military tensions between the United States and Iran continue to escalate across the West Asian region.
Violation of Commitments and the MoU
According to reports from Iran's state media, Press TV, Esmaeil Baghaei stated that Iran no longer considers itself bound to comply with the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) previously established with the United States. The primary objective of this MoU was to bring an end to the ongoing conflicts in the region. However, Tehran now accuses Washington of failing to uphold its end of the agreement. Baghaei specifically mentioned that as long as the United States continues to violate its commitments under the MoU signed on June 17, Iran won't return to the negotiating table.
The spokesperson was firm in his assertion, stating, "Currently, we've no plans for talks. " This statement serves as a direct rebuttal to claims made by the United States, which suggested that its military operations would eventually pressure Iran into returning to negotiations, while iran has also made it clear that it won't compromise on the Strait of Hormuz and that the United States won't be able to force this passage open through warfare.
Accusations of Bad Faith
The Foreign Ministry spokesperson further elaborated that Iran believes the United States failed to fulfill its responsibilities from the very inception of the agreement. Consequently, Iran has decided to reconsider its own obligations. Baghaei explained that a Memorandum of Understanding is fundamentally based on the mutual commitments of both parties involved. He noted that if one side violates the terms, the other side is no longer obligated to fulfill its responsibilities. He described this as a core principle that Iran will continue to follow in the future. According to Baghaei, the other party showed bad faith starting from the very first article of the MoU and broke its promises.
Readiness for Military Confrontation
In addition to the diplomatic standoff, Baghaei highlighted that there is widespread public support within Iran to counter American pressure. He issued a stern warning regarding potential military aggression, stating that if any military attack is launched against Iran, its armed forces will respond with full force. "Our armed forces will respond to any aggressor with full strength. If they attack, they will also have to face a retaliatory strike," Baghaei warned, while this statement is particularly significant as the United States has been conducting continuous military strikes in Iran's coastal areas.
The Conflict Over the Strait of Hormuz
The United States has justified its military operations by claiming they're intended to weaken Iran's military capabilities, which could pose a threat to commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. However, Iran has categorically rejected these allegations. Tehran maintains that under Article 5 of the 14 point MoU, the responsibility for managing the movement through the Strait of Hormuz has been assigned to Iran. The tension between the two nations has intensified following recent US military operations targeting Iran's infrastructure and maritime assets. Iran remains steadfast that its management of the strategic waterway is a matter of sovereign right and established agreement, which the US is now undermining through its actions.
