The residents of Uttar Pradesh are set to receive a major gift as the much-awaited Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway is scheduled for its official inauguration on Monday, July 13. This 63 kilometer long expressway is poised to revolutionize the connectivity between the capital city of Lucknow and the industrial hub of Kanpur. 5 to 3 hours due to heavy traffic, will be drastically reduced to just 35 to 45 minutes. In some stretches, the journey might take between 45 to 50 minutes, but it remains a significant improvement over the existing conditions.

Inauguration and Key Dignitaries

The inauguration ceremony is slated to take place in Unnao, while the event will be graced by the presence of Union Defense Minister Rajnath Singh and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. Their participation underscores the strategic and developmental importance of this project for the state and the nation. The expressway, officially designated as National Expressway-6 (NE-6), represents a milestone in India's infrastructure landscape, being the country's first barrier-less expressway. This feature is expected to ensure a smoother flow of traffic without the traditional stops at barriers.

Technical Specifications and Route Details

The construction of this 63 kilometer expressway has utilized highly advanced 3D AMG technology, ensuring precision and durability. One of the most striking features of this project is that approximately 30 percent of its total length is built as an elevated corridor, meaning a significant portion of the route is literally in the air. The expressway will connect Lucknow's Shaheed Path directly to Chakeri in Kanpur. This new route is designed to serve as a high-speed alternative to the heavily congested 94 kilometer long old route of NH-27, thereby saving both fuel and precious time for commuters.

Speed, Capacity, and Connectivity

To ensure rapid transit, the maximum speed limit for vehicles on this expressway has been set at 120 kilometers per hour. Currently, the expressway is constructed as a 6-lane facility. However, keeping future traffic growth in mind, sufficient space has already been left to expand it to an 8-lane expressway when required. This route isn't just a link between two cities but a strategic connector that joins three different expressways together, providing a direct benefit to people living in several other districts of Uttar Pradesh.

Financial Investment and Toll Information

The total cost incurred in the completion of this massive infrastructure project is 4700 crore rupees. Regarding the toll system, a total of 5 toll plazas have been established along the route. However, in a move to facilitate local connectivity, no tax will be charged at the toll plaza connecting to the Outer Ring Road. For the remaining 4 toll plazas, taxes will be levied based on the type of vehicle using the expressway. This structured approach ensures that the maintenance of the world-class facility is funded while providing some exemptions.

Historical Context and Development

The journey of the Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway began several years ago. According to NHAI, the foundation stone for this project was first laid in March 2019 and subsequently on January 5, 2022. It was officially nominated as National Expressway-6 in December 2020. The completion of this project marks the fulfillment of a long-standing demand for better connectivity between these two major urban centers of Uttar Pradesh.
