The first batch of Agniveers recruited under the Agnipath service scheme for a period of 4 years in the Indian Armed Forces is approaching its retirement milestone. According to the foundational provisions of this scheme, out of the total candidates recruited, 75 percent of the candidates are scheduled to be released from service upon completion of their tenure, while the remaining 25 percent are to be regularized as permanent personnel. Meanwhile, extensive efforts and preparations are underway across the nation to provide re-employment opportunities and secure futures for the retiring Agniveers, while in this context, paramilitary forces along with several state governments have announced reservation systems and various exemptions for retiring Agniveers in their respective recruitment processes. Amidst these developments, state governments are now taking direct steps to provide direct appointments to retiring Agniveers, marked notably by a significant announcement made by the Uttarakhand government on Friday.

Uttarakhand Government's Historic Decision: Direct Adjustment of 2 Retired Agniveers in PAC

The primary case of providing direct appointments to retired Agniveers has emerged from the state of Uttarakhand. An official announcement in this regard was made by the Uttarakhand government on Friday, under which 2 retired Agniveers will be directly adjusted against available vacant posts in the 40th PAC battalion. State Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has granted his formal approval to the proposal presented in this regard, paving the way for smooth administrative implementation.

Decision Based on Central Government's Expectation Following Joint Secretary's Letter

The Uttarakhand government stated in its official release that a formal letter had been dispatched by the Joint Secretary of the Central Government in this regard. The letter conveyed the expectation that retiring Agniveers should be suitably adjusted across various departments. Following up on this expectation and guidance from the central authorities, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami gave his full consent to the proposal, approving the adjustment of two Agniveers against the available vacant positions in the 40th PAC battalion.

First Batch to Retire on November 21, All Three Services Consider Increasing Retention Rate

The first batch of candidates recruited under the Agnipath scheme is set to complete its tenure and exit from the Indian Navy on November 21, 2026. This implies that the services of 75 percent of the candidates recruited in the first batch will conclude, while 25 percent of the candidates will be retained as permanent personnel. However, considering the evolving operational requirements, all three branches of the armed forces are seriously considering increasing the retention rate for making Agniveers permanent. Under this deliberation, a comprehensive proposal is expected to be sent by the three services to the central government after the first batch completes its service tenure.

50 Percent Heavy Reservation in CAPF and Assam Rifles

To provide excellent secondary government job opportunities to former Agniveers, strong reservation provisions have been enacted in Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) such as BSF, CRPF, CISF, ITBP, and Assam Rifles. Under these provisions, a clear mandate has been established to provide 50 percent reservation for the posts of Constable (General Duty) and Rifleman in CAPF and Assam Rifles. To streamline recruitment in these security forces, a brand new category named ex-Agniveer has been created to grant priority to these candidates.

Exemption from Physical Standards, Efficiency Tests, and Written Examinations

In addition to these provisions, former Agniveers are also being granted major relaxations in the recruitment processes of CAPF and Assam Rifles. They will receive complete exemptions from the Physical Standards Test (PST), Physical Efficiency Test (PET), and written examinations. These special exemptions apply primarily to former Agniveers applying for Constable (General Duty) and Rifleman positions, enabling them to easily qualify based on their established military discipline and physical conditioning.

Major Announcements of Reservations and Age Relaxation Across States

Not only at the central level, but governments of various states across the country have already made major announcements to provide lucrative government job opportunities to former Agniveers. Under these announcements, 10 to 20 percent of positions in various government jobs have been officially reserved. Also, provisions have been made to grant a relaxation of 3 to 5 years in upper age limit rules. This simply means that former Agniveer applicants will have 3 additional years compared to normal candidates to apply for government vacancies. Notably, the very first batch of Agniveers will receive a full 5-year age relaxation. States including Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh have already announced similar policy measures, creating a positive environment for the youth.
