In a development that has sent ripples through the political landscape of West Bengal, Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee faced an unexpected situation during a high-level meeting of party legislators. On Sunday, a meeting was convened at her residence in Kalighat at 4 PM, intended to address the current political challenges facing the party. However, the turnout raised several eyebrows as only 20 out of the total 80 TMC MLAs were present at the venue. This significant absence of 60 legislators has sparked intense speculation regarding the internal stability of the party following its recent electoral performance in the state.
The Context of the Meeting
The meeting was called against the backdrop of increasing pressure on the Trinamool Congress leadership. Recent incidents involving attacks on high-profile party figures, including the party's All India General Secretary and Member of Parliament Abhishek Banerjee, as well as MP Kalyan Banerjee, have created a sense of urgency within the party ranks. Mamata Banerjee sought to gather her legislators to discuss these developments and formulate a collective response. Despite the gravity of the situation, the low attendance has led to questions about whether the party is facing a potential rift or if there is a growing distance between the leadership and its elected representatives.
Speculations of a Rift
As the news of the low attendance spread, political analysts began speculating about the reasons behind the absence of 60 MLAs. There are rumors suggesting that a large section of the party might be in contact with the ruling party at the center, although no official statements have been released by either the TMC or the BJP regarding these claims. The fact that mostly senior legislators were among the 20 who attended has further fueled the narrative that the younger or more local-level leadership might be drifting away. The attendees included prominent names such as Kunal Ghosh, Shobhandeb Chatterjee, Madan Mitra, Nayana Banerjee, Ashok Kumar Deb, and Biman Banerjee, who arrived one by one at the Kalighat residence.
Official Clarification from Kunal Ghosh
Amidst the growing rumors of a split, MLA Kunal Ghosh stepped out of Mamata Banerjee's residence to address the media and project a front of party unity. He clarified that the meeting had to be postponed because many legislators were occupied with protest programs in their respective constituencies. Ghosh stated, "Yesterday, there was an attack on Trinamool's All India General Secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee. Today, MP Kalyan Banerjee was attacked again. In protest against this, Trinamool MLAs are organizing programs in their areas. " He further explained that many MLAs had called the party leadership requesting a postponement of the meeting, which led to the official decision to cancel the formal session. The 20 members who did arrive held a brief internal discussion instead.
Upcoming Protests and Opposition Reaction
The party has announced a series of protest actions to demonstrate its strength. On June 1, Trinamool workers will take out protest marches at the ward and block levels across the state. Following this, on June 2, Mamata Banerjee herself will lead a one-day sit-in protest (dharna) to address various issues, including the attack on Abhishek Banerjee and the removal of hawkers from Rani Rashmoni Road. Meanwhile, the opposition has been quick to capitalize on the situation, while bJP MLA from Maniktala, Tapas Roy, mocked the cancellation of the meeting, stating that the TMC legislators have effectively expressed a lack of confidence in Mamata Banerjee's leadership.
