Progress on India-US Interim Trade Agreement

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, India and the United States have reached a consensus on a framework for an interim agreement focused on reciprocal and mutually beneficial trade. Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal noted that a joint statement regarding this framework was issued on 7 February 2026. This statement serves as the foundation for the shared understanding between the two nations, while officials stated that both sides are now working toward implementing this framework and finalizing the interim agreement. Recent updates in the US factsheet are seen as a reflection of this shared diplomatic understanding.

Strategic Engagement with Russia and China

Regarding relations with Russia, the MEA clarified that there is continuous engagement and cooperation across multiple sectors, including trade, defense, and cultural exchanges. The spokesperson affirmed that all aspects of these bilateral ties are expected to grow further. On the subject of China, it was reported that a strategic dialogue took place between India's Foreign Secretary and China's Executive Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs during the BRICS Sherpa meeting held in Delhi between February 8 and 10. Discussions centered on maintaining peace at the border and the essential factors for progressing bilateral relations. China expressed its understanding and respect for India's aspirations regarding permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).

Participation in Trump’s Board of Peace Initiative

On the matter of the 'Board of Peace' proposed by US President Donald Trump, the MEA confirmed that India has received an invitation to join the initiative. The spokesperson stated that the government is currently reviewing the proposal. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has welcomed the initiative, which aligns with India's consistent support for efforts aimed at promoting peace, stability, and dialogue in West Asia. India has historically maintained a proactive stance in supporting international initiatives that seek diplomatic resolutions to regional conflicts.

Security Collaboration and Liaison Officers with Canada

Detailing National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval's recent visit to Ottawa, the Ministry explained that the meeting with his counterpart was part of ongoing collaboration on security matters. Both India and Canada have agreed to appoint liaison officers to ensure a clear and efficient flow of information and better coordination on security issues. This regular dialogue is intended to strengthen the security framework between the two nations, while according to officials, further updates regarding the timeline for the appointment of these officers will be provided as they become available.

Bangladesh Elections and Brazil President’s State Visit

Addressing the upcoming elections in Bangladesh, the MEA stated that India stands for a free, fair, inclusive, and credible electoral process. The spokesperson mentioned that India is awaiting the election results and the subsequent mandate before addressing specific issues in the neighboring country. Also, the Ministry announced that Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will visit India from 18 to 22 February 2026, at the invitation of PM Modi. President Lula is scheduled to participate in the second AI Summit in Delhi on February 19-20, followed by bilateral talks on February 21. He will be accompanied by a high-level ministerial and business delegation.
