In a major political development in Madhya Pradesh, the nomination of Congress Rajya Sabha candidate Meenakshi Natarajan has been cancelled. This decision has dealt a significant blow to the Congress party's prospects in the state. The rejection of her nomination papers has effectively cleared the path for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Mahesh Kewat to enter the Rajya Sabha. With this turn of events, the BJP is now set to win all three Rajya Sabha seats from Madhya Pradesh without a contest, as the opposition's challenge has effectively collapsed due to technical grounds.

The Reason for Rejection

The cancellation of Meenakshi Natarajan's nomination followed a formal objection raised by the BJP. The ruling party alleged that there were several discrepancies in her nomination form and that she had deliberately concealed vital information. Specifically, the BJP claimed that Natarajan failed to disclose details regarding an ongoing legal case against her in a court in Telangana. According to the election rules, candidates are required to provide full disclosure of all pending criminal or civil cases. Upon reviewing the objections and the evidence provided, the election authorities found the claims to be valid and subsequently rejected her nomination papers. This occurred even as the Congress party was reportedly making efforts to keep its legislators together to prevent any potential cross-voting during the polls.

Who is Mahesh Kewat?

Mahesh Kewat, the BJP leader whose victory is now certain, is a veteran figure within the party with a long history of service. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav recently spoke highly of Kewat, praising his lifelong dedication to the organization. The Chief Minister noted that Mahesh Kewat has been an active Swayamsevak of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) since his childhood. Throughout his political career, he has held various significant responsibilities within the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM). His deep-rooted connection with the ideological foundations of the party has made him a respected figure among the cadres.

Administrative Experience and Cultural Significance

Beyond his organizational roles, Mahesh Kewat has also served in administrative capacities, while he's a former Chairman of the Madhya Pradesh Fisheries Welfare Board (Machhua Kalyan Board), where he worked extensively for the welfare of the fishing community. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav emphasized the cultural significance of Kewat's nomination, stating that the blessings of Lord Ram are once again upholding the tradition of Nishad Raj through Mahesh Kewat. This symbolic connection highlights the party's focus on representing diverse social groups. With the disqualification of the Congress candidate, Mahesh Kewat will now join Tarun Chugh and Rajneesh Agrawal as the third BJP representative from the state in the Rajya Sabha. The BJP already possessed the necessary numbers for its first two candidates, and the rejection of Natarajan's papers has now secured the third seat as well.
