Sports News: Neeraj Chopra Honored as Honorary Lieutenant Colonel in Indian Army

Neeraj Chopra, the star javelin thrower known as India's 'Golden Boy,' has received a significant honor. He has been conferred the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Territorial Army for his contributions to the nation.

A Prestigious Honor

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi presented the insignia to Neeraj in Delhi, while while the honorary rank was officially conferred on May 14, 2025, it became effective from April 16, 2025. Previously, he held the rank of Subedar Major, a position from which he had to resign as per army regulations that prohibit holding two different ranks simultaneously.

Chopra's Army Journey and Achievements

Neeraj Chopra, a Tokyo Olympics gold medalist and Paris Olympics silver medalist, has been associated with the Indian Army for the past nine years. He joined the army as a Naib Subedar on August 26, 2016. Due to his exceptional sporting achievements, he was promoted to Subedar in 2021 and then to Subedar Major in 2022. He has also been honored with the Arjuna Award and Khel Ratna Award for his outstanding performances in athletics.

Family's Presence and Dhoni's Parallel

The ceremony in Delhi was attended by his father Satish Chopra, mother Saroj Devi, wife Himani, and uncle Bhim Chopra, reflecting the immense joy within his family. This honor places him alongside legendary cricketer MS Dhoni, who also holds the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Territorial Army.

Recent Sporting Performance
