In a significant move to ensure the integrity of the upcoming NEET-UG 2026 re-examination, the Central Government has announced a temporary ban on the popular messaging platform Telegram. This decision comes just days before the scheduled re-exam on June 21, 2026. The National Testing Agency (NTA) stated that the suspension of Telegram services is a precautionary measure aimed at preventing the spread of fraudulent paper leak materials and protecting students from online scams. The ban is set to remain in effect until June 22, 2026, covering the entire duration of the examination process to maintain a secure environment for all aspirants.

Reason Behind the Temporary Suspension

The NTA has observed a surge in suspicious activities on Telegram, where several channels were found to be misleading candidates and their families. According to official reports, certain groups were operating under deceptive names such as Paper Leaked NEET, Re-NEET 2026, and Private Mafia. These channels were allegedly demanding significant sums of money, ranging from thousands to lakhs of rupees, in exchange for providing what they claimed to be the actual question papers for the re-exam. The agency has categorically clarified that the examination papers are completely secure and aren't available to anyone prior to the commencement of the test. The government aims to dismantle these networks that exploit the anxiety of students.

Misuse of Telegram Features

One of the primary reasons for the ban is the identified misuse of Telegram's message editing feature. The NTA explained that scammers often post generic messages before the exam and then use the edit feature after the exam has concluded to insert actual questions from the paper. This creates a false impression that the paper was leaked beforehand. To counter this specific tactic, the government has also ordered the suspension of the message edit feature on the platform until June 30, 2026. This comprehensive approach is designed to eliminate any possibility of creating fake evidence of a paper leak and to ensure that no misinformation can be retroactively validated through edited timestamps.

Collaborative Action by Government Agencies

The crackdown on these fraudulent activities is a result of a coordinated effort between multiple high-level government bodies, while the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), which operates under the Ministry of Home Affairs, has been working closely with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and various state police departments. Together, they've successfully identified and removed numerous fake Telegram channels and automated bots that were being used to circulate misinformation and solicit money from vulnerable students. This multi-agency response highlights the government's zero-tolerance policy towards examination-related fraud.

Impact on Candidates and NTA's Appeal

With approximately 22 lakh candidates set to appear for the NEET-UG 2026 re-examination, the NTA acknowledged the inconvenience this temporary ban might cause. The agency noted that millions of people use Telegram for legitimate purposes such as education, employment updates, and personal communication. However, the NTA emphasized that the safety and fairness of the 21 June exam are of paramount importance. The agency has urged students and parents not to fall prey to rumors or unverified information circulating on social media. in and the NTA's official social media handles, while this re-examination follows the cancellation of the original NEET UG exam held on May 3, making it a critical event for the future of nearly 22 lakh medical aspirants across the country.
