Sushila Karki News: A new era is about to begin in Nepal. Former Chief Justice Sushila Karki is set to become the country's first female Prime Minister. President Ramchandra Paudel will administer the oath to her soon. There is a broad consensus among Gen-Z supporters about this appointment, and Kathmandu Mayor Balen Shah, who himself was a contender for the post of Prime Minister, has also supported Karki. The name of former Nepal Electricity Board chief Kulman Ghising was also in the news for the post of interim Prime Minister, but Karki's popularity and his strong track record put him ahead in the race.

Sushila Karki: Symbol of anti-corruption movement

73-year-old Sushila Karki has long been the face of anti-government protests in Nepal. During her tenure as the first female Chief Justice of the Nepal Supreme Court, she took several important and bold decisions against corruption. These decisions made her extremely popular especially among Gen-Z. Her fairness and courage have made her a source of inspiration for the younger generation.

First woman Chief Justice and her journey

Sushila Karki was born on 7 June 1952 in Biratnagar, Nepal. She is the eldest of seven children of her parents. She obtained a BA degree from Mahendra Morang Campus, Biratnagar in 1972. After this, she did a Masters in Political Science from Banaras Hindu University (BHU), India in 1975. In 1978, she received a law degree from Tribhuvan University, Nepal and started practicing law a year later in 1979.

On 11 July 2016, Sushila Karki became the first woman Chief Justice of Nepal. However, her tenure lasted only for a year, as an impeachment motion was brought against her on 30 April 2017, after which she was suspended. This incident brought her more discussion, and her supporters termed it a political conspiracy.

Positive outlook towards India

In a recent interview, Sushila Karki shared her deep connection with India. Recalling her days spent at Banaras Hindu University, she said, "I still remember the teachers and friends of BHU. The hostel on the banks of the river Ganges and sleeping on the roof during summer nights are fresh memories."

Karki is very positive about India-Nepal relations. She said, "I greet Prime Minister Narendra Modi. I have a good opinion about him. The people-to-people relationship between India and Nepal is very strong and loving. We have many relatives and acquaintances in India, and this relationship of goodwill between the two countries is very special."

She also told that she is from Biratnagar, which is only 25 miles from the Indian border. She regularly visits the markets located on the border and is impressed by Indian leaders. It is clear from her statements that their coming to power in Nepal can be a positive sign for India-Nepal relations.

Future plans

Sushila Karki expressed her desire to resume dialogue with India in her interview. She said, "We have not been in touch with India for many days. We will talk about it. Both countries should make policies together in international matters." This thinking of hers can promote cooperation and mutual understanding between the two countries.
