Nifty 50 Index Rejig: BSE Ltd To Enter While Wipro Exits Index

In a significant development for the Indian equity markets, NSE Indices has announced a major reshuffle across its key indices, including the benchmark Nifty 50. This semi-annual review has led to several high-profile entries and exits that are set to alter the composition of India's most-watched stock market gauges. The most prominent highlight of this announcement is the inclusion of BSE Ltd into the Nifty 50 index, marking a historic moment for the exchange operator. Conversely, the information technology giant Wipro will be excluded from the blue-chip index. These changes are scheduled to take effect from September 30 2026.

The Nifty 50 Transformation

The inclusion of BSE Ltd into the Nifty 50 is the cornerstone of this reshuffle. According to the official announcement, BSE will replace Wipro in the index, while this transition will be implemented after the close of trading hours on September 29, ensuring that by the start of the trading session on September 30, the new index composition is in place. While Wipro exits the Nifty 50, it won't disappear from the broader Nifty ecosystem. Instead, Wipro will find a new place in the Nifty Next 50 index. This move is consistent with the index methodology where Nifty 100 stocks that don't qualify for the Nifty 50 are placed in the Nifty Next 50 category.

Major Changes in Nifty 100 and Nifty Next 50

The Nifty 100 index is also witnessing a substantial overhaul with 5 stocks being replaced. The companies exiting the Nifty 100 include Indian Hotels, Lodha Developers, REC, Shree Cement, and United Spirits. These outgoing stocks will be replaced by a fresh set of companies: BSE, Hitachi Energy India, Polycab India, Vedanta Aluminium Metal, and Vodafone Idea. It's important to note that these identical changes will also be reflected in the Nifty100 Equal Weight Index.

Simultaneously, the Nifty Next 50 index will see the entry of 5 new companies. Following their exit from the Nifty 100 or the reshuffle process, Hitachi Energy India, Polycab India, Vedanta Aluminium Metal, Vodafone Idea, and Wipro will be added to the Nifty Next 50. To make room for these, Indian Hotels, Lodha Developers, REC, Shree Cement, and United Spirits will be removed from this index as well.

Massive Rejig in Nifty 500

The broadest index, Nifty 500, is set for the most extensive transformation. A total of 27 companies will be excluded from the index, making way for 27 new entrants. Among the notable names joining the Nifty 500 are Aether Industries, Avanti Feeds, Azad Engineering, Bharat Coking Coal, Black Box, Cupid, INOX India, Rubicon Research, and Sterlite Technologies. This large-scale movement reflects the evolving nature of the Indian corporate landscape and market capitalization trends.

Impact on Investors and Market Liquidity

These index changes carry significant implications for investors, particularly those invested in passive funds. Index funds and Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) that track the Nifty 50, Nifty 100, or Nifty 500 will be required to rebalance their portfolios to align with the new compositions. This rebalancing act often leads to increased buying and selling activity in the affected stocks, while investors can expect a surge in trading volume and shifts in liquidity around September 30 as institutional players adjust their holdings to match the updated index weights.
