In a significant development in Bihar politics, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has resigned from his membership of the Bihar Legislative Council. Alongside him, senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Nitin Nabin has also tendered his resignation from the Bihar Legislative Assembly, while according to official reports, both leaders submitted their resignations to the respective presiding officers of the houses today. This transition follows their recent election to the Rajya Sabha, marking the beginning of a new chapter in their political careers at the national level.

Compliance with Constitutional Mandates

The resignations were necessitated by constitutional provisions that prohibit an individual from holding seats in two different legislative houses simultaneously. According to the rules, a member elected to another house must resign from one of the positions within 14 days. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Nitin Nabin were elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha on March 16. Consequently, March 30 marked the final deadline for them to vacate their current seats in the state legislature to retain their Rajya Sabha membership.

Representation Across All Four Legislative Houses

Nitish Kumar's entry into the Rajya Sabha is a historic milestone in his extensive political journey. With this move, he joins a select group of Indian politicians who have represented all four legislative bodies: the Lok Sabha, the Rajya Sabha, the Legislative Assembly (Vidhan Sabha), and the Legislative Council (Vidhan Parishad). His career has spanned various roles, from being a Member of Parliament to serving as the Chief Minister of Bihar for multiple terms while being a member of the Legislative Council.

High-Level Deliberations at the CM Residence

Prior to the formal resignation process, intense political activity was observed at the Chief Minister's residence on Sunday evening. Senior leaders of the Janata Dal (United) held a meeting with the Chief Minister to discuss the transition. The meeting was attended by prominent figures including Union Minister Lalan Singh, Executive President Sanjay Kumar झा, Vijay Kumar Chaudhary, and Ashok Chaudhary, while according to sources, the discussions focused on future administrative strategies and the political landscape of the state following these resignations.

A Distinguished Political Career

Nitish Kumar began his legislative career in 1985 as an MLA from Harnaut in Nalanda. He moved to national politics in 1989 after being elected to the Lok Sabha from the Barh constituency. During his tenure at the Centre, he held vital portfolios such as Railways, Agriculture, and Surface Transport. His tenure as the Railway Minister is particularly noted for implementing comprehensive structural reforms. Since 2005, he has led Bihar as the Chief Minister, earning the moniker 'Sushasan Babu' for his focus on governance and development.

Key Policy Initiatives and Social Reforms

As Chief Minister, Nitish Kumar is credited with several transformative social and administrative reforms in Bihar. These include the implementation of total prohibition of liquor, the introduction of the bicycle scheme for schoolgirls, and providing 50% reservation for women in Panchayati Raj institutions. These initiatives have Importantly impacted the socio-economic fabric of the state. As he transitions to the Rajya Sabha, he's expected to bring his extensive administrative experience to the upper house of Parliament.
