The Noida International Airport, located in Jewar, is set to commence operations following its official inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 28. This landmark project, envisioned over two decades ago, has completed its first phase across 1334 hectares. The airport is designed to serve as a secondary hub for the National Capital Region, Notably reducing the traffic load on Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport. According to government officials, the facility will eventually expand to 5100 hectares, making it one of the largest aviation hubs in Asia.
Advanced ILS Technology for All-Weather Operations
A standout feature of the Noida International Airport is its state-of-the-art Instrument Landing System (ILS). This technology is specifically integrated to counter the challenges of dense fog prevalent in North India during winter months, while the system enables flight operations even when visibility drops to as low as 50 meters, ensuring minimal delays and cancellations. The primary runway, measuring 3900 meters in length and 45 meters in width, is fully equipped to handle large wide-body aircraft. The long-term master plan includes the construction of a total of 6 runways to accommodate future growth.
Flight Network and Participating Airlines
In the initial phase of operations, major domestic carriers including IndiGo, Akasa Air, and Air India Express will begin scheduled services. The airport will provide direct connectivity to 11 key Indian cities, including Varanasi, Lucknow, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Chennai, Patna, Kanpur, and Srinagar. It's estimated that the airport will handle approximately 150 flight movements daily during the starting period. This connectivity is expected to benefit millions of travelers from Western Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Rajasthan.
Strategic Cargo and Logistics Infrastructure
Beyond passenger services, the Jewar airport is positioned as a premier global cargo and logistics gateway, while 5 million tonnes. The inclusion of Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facilities within the airport premises aims to make it a self-sustaining aviation ecosystem. This infrastructure is expected to transform Uttar Pradesh into a major logistics hub, facilitating smoother trade and export operations for the region's industrial sectors.
Security Protocols and Safety Standards
The security of the Noida International Airport has been entrusted to the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF). For the first phase, a contingent of 1047 personnel will be deployed to manage terminal and perimeter security. The airport also features high-tier Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) capabilities, adhering to the most stringent international safety regulations, while advanced surveillance systems and biometric processing are integrated to ensure a smooth and secure passenger experience from check-in to boarding.
Regional Connectivity and Sustainable Design
The airport is strategically located 72km from IGI Airport, 52km from Noida, and 130km from Agra, with direct access via the Yamuna Expressway. Future plans include integrating the airport with the Delhi Metro and the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) for enhanced multi-modal connectivity. Developed as a 'Greenfield' project, the airport emphasizes sustainability through the use of solar energy, comprehensive rainwater harvesting systems, and a commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions. Extensive landscaping and green zones have been incorporated to maintain ecological balance within the aviation complex.
