Pakistan Defense Minister Threatens India: Claims Conflict Could Reach Kolkata

Pakistan's Defense Minister Khawaja Asif issued a provocative statement against India on Saturday while addressing reporters in Sialkot. Asif warned that in the event of a future military escalation, the conflict would no longer be confined to the international borders or the Line of Control (LoC). He claimed that Pakistan possesses the capability to extend its reach as far as Kolkata, suggesting that the theater of war would expand deep into Indian territory. These remarks come amid heightened regional tensions and a history of cross-border skirmishes that have characterized bilateral relations over the past year.

Allegations of False Flag Operations

During his press interaction, Khawaja Asif alleged that the Indian government is planning to orchestrate a "false flag operation" to justify military action against Pakistan. He claimed that India might use its own citizens or detained Pakistanis to create a scripted security crisis. Asif further suggested that bodies could be placed at specific locations to frame Pakistan for terrorism, although he didn't provide any evidence or intelligence reports to substantiate these claims. He asserted that any such attempt by India would result in greater international embarrassment than previously experienced, referencing past military standoffs between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.

India's Stance and Rajnath Singh's Warning

While the Indian government has not issued a formal rebuttal to Asif's specific comments in Sialkot, Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh recently delivered a stern warning to Islamabad. Speaking at an event in Kerala, Singh stated that if Pakistan continues to engage in "dirty games" or proxy warfare, the Indian Armed Forces would deliver a decisive and unforgettable response. He noted that "Operation Sindoor" has not concluded and emphasized that Indian soldiers are prepared to cross any limits to ensure national security. According to officials in the Indian defense establishment, the military remains on high alert to counter any misadventure from across the border.

Regional Dynamics and Proxy War Claims

Khawaja Asif also extended his allegations to include the Taliban-led government in Afghanistan. He claimed that New Delhi and Kabul are collaborating to wage a proxy war against Pakistan, while according to the Pakistani Defense Minister, there is a convergence of interests between India and Afghanistan regarding attacks on Pakistani soil. He warned that Pakistan wouldn't hesitate to conduct military operations inside Afghanistan if the Taliban administration fails to provide concrete guarantees of peace. Asif maintained that the possibility of a full-scale conventional war with India remains a reality, complicating the geopolitical landscape of South Asia.

Context of Abdul Basit's Controversial Remarks

The rhetoric from the Pakistani defense leadership follows similar controversial statements made by former Pakistani High Commissioner to India, Abdul Basit, while in a recent discussion, Basit suggested that if the United States were to ever target Pakistan, Islamabad should immediately launch strikes against Mumbai and New Delhi. He argued that since the US is beyond Pakistan's nuclear range, India would be the primary target for retaliation. While Basit described this as a "worst-case scenario," such statements from former high-ranking diplomats have contributed to the volatile atmosphere and diplomatic friction between the two nations.

Background of Operation Sindoor and Pahalgam Attack

The current cycle of tension is rooted in the Pahalgam terror attack on 22 April 2025, which resulted in the deaths of 26 individuals. In retaliation, India launched "Operation Sindoor," conducting precision air and drone strikes on nine terrorist launchpads in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) on 7 May 2025. The Indian Army reported that over 100 terrorists, including members of Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed, were neutralized in the operation. Pakistan responded with artillery fire and drone deployments, leading to a four-day escalation that eventually ended with a ceasefire on 10 May 2025. Asif's latest threats are viewed as a continuation of this ongoing military and diplomatic confrontation.
