In a shocking incident that has sent ripples through the sports community, the Ghaziabad police have solved the murder case of 24 year old international para athlete Chirag Tyagi. The investigation led to the arrest of his long time friend and fellow para athlete, Yash Khatik, while the case, which initially appeared to be a mysterious killing, has turned out to be a tale of deep seated resentment and betrayal among friends who once practiced together for national glory.
The Arrest and Confession
The breakthrough in the case came through the meticulous analysis of CCTV footage from the area where the crime occurred. Based on the visual evidence, the police apprehended Yash Khatik. During the subsequent interrogation, the accused confessed to the crime, revealing a chilling motive rooted in professional jealousy and revenge. Yash Khatik admitted to shooting Chirag Tyagi at close range, ending the life of a promising athlete who had recently brought laurels to the country.
A Grudge Born from Disqualification
The roots of this tragedy trace back to the competitive world of para athletics. Yash Khatik and Chirag Tyagi were old associates who had been practicing athletics together since their school days under the Blind Category. However, their friendship soured during a document verification process some time ago. According to the accused, Chirag Tyagi had filed a formal complaint against him during the verification. This complaint led to the cancellation of Yash Khatik's qualification, effectively barring him from participating in major sports competitions. Consumed by anger and the loss of his sporting career, Yash decided to take revenge. He procured a pistol and waited for the right opportunity to eliminate Chirag.
A Career Cut Short at Its Peak
Chirag Tyagi, a resident of Basantpur Sainthali village in the Muradnagar area of Ghaziabad, was a rising star in Indian para athletics. His death is particularly tragic as it comes just days after his greatest professional achievement. Only two days before his murder, Chirag had won a Gold Medal in the 400 meter race at the National Para Athletics Competition held in Bengaluru. This victory had secured his selection for the upcoming Para Asian Games scheduled to be held in Japan this October. While his family was still celebrating his national success and preparing for his international journey, their world was shattered by this senseless act of violence.
Details of the Incident
The sequence of events began on Wednesday morning when Chirag left his home, informing his family that he was heading to his hostel. When the family was unable to contact him for several hours, they grew anxious, while later that day, around 3 PM, the police received information about a body found in the Sai Kunj (also known as Sai Upvan) area. Upon reaching the spot, Chirag's family members identified the body. His cousin, Ashish Tyagi, had expressed suspicions of murder from the very beginning and had demanded strict action against the perpetrators.
Police Investigation and Legal Action
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Dhaval Jaiswal stated that the accused, Yash Khatik, is currently in custody and further legal proceedings are underway. The police are conducting raids to recover the pistol used in the murder. On top of that, investigators are looking into whether Yash Khatik acted alone or if there were other accomplices involved in the planning or execution of the crime. The body of the deceased has been sent for a post mortem examination to confirm the technical details of the assault. The local community and the sports fraternity remain in shock as they mourn the loss of a talented athlete whose life was taken by a trusted friend.
