The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance has turned its sharp focus toward crucial economic subjects shaping the nation's financial landscape during the current fiscal year. The committee has selected a total of 46 subjects to conduct detailed examinations and prepare comprehensive reports. Prominent among these chosen subjects are the studies on artificial intelligence, commonly known as AI, currency management, and virtual digital assets, while earlier this month, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla reconstituted several parliamentary committees attached to various ministries. Under this institutional process, Bharatiya Janata Party MP Bhartruhari Mahtab was re-appointed as the chairperson of the Standing Committee on Finance, while this vital committee comprises 21 members from the Lok Sabha and 10 members from the Rajya Sabha who will collectively review all these financial and economic matters thoroughly.

Comprehensive examination and rigorous review of 46 cases

According to the Lok Sabha bulletin, the Standing Committee on Finance for the year 2026-27 will deal with 46 subjects related to the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, NITI Aayog, and the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation. All these subjects chosen by the panel are highly relevant in the context of prevailing economic conditions, while the list of subjects includes strategies for price and currency stability, currency management, regulatory mechanisms within the financial sector, and the monetization of public sector assets. Plus, the committee will study the banking, pension, and health insurance sectors, while also evaluating social security measures for the unorganized sector and various central government schemes. This panel will closely review the changing macroeconomic landscape, small savings schemes, the evolving role of the Reserve Bank of India in a changing economy, and the overall functioning of SEBI.

Focus on AI, crypto, tax reforms, and other critical areas

The parliamentary panel isn't restricting itself to traditional financial affairs alone; rather, it will deeply contemplate futuristic technologies and emerging economic issues, while the panel will also look into aspects concerning customs, GST, and direct tax reforms. Alongside this, it will conduct a detailed study on virtual digital assets and the way forward. A thorough analysis of new issues and possibilities associated with artificial intelligence in the financial sector will be undertaken, while strict investigations will be carried out regarding regulatory gaps existing within the NBFC sector. In relation to the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, the standing committee will study the challenges faced by the National Company Law Tribunal and the way forward for resolving them. Also, it will review corporate social responsibility, corporate e-governance, and the accountability of auditors. On the front of NITI Aayog, the committee will assess the role of the commission in formulating roadmaps for various sectors and the functioning of the aspirational districts programme. For the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, the panel will study national accounts statistics and suggest concrete measures to strengthen the economic data architecture so that national economic policies can be implemented with greater effectiveness.
