Petrol and Diesel Prices May Fall Soon: Hardeep Singh Puri's Big Update

In a significant development for Indian consumers, Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri has hinted at a potential reduction in petrol and diesel prices across the country, while this update comes in the wake of a substantial decline in international crude oil prices, which have seen a drop of more than 15 percent during the month of June alone. On top of that, the global market witnessed an 8 percent decline in crude oil rates just last week. Minister Puri suggested that if the crude oil recently purchased at these lower rates reaches Indian refineries, the benefits could be passed on to the public in the form of lower fuel prices.

Current Challenges for Oil Marketing Companies

Addressing a press conference in the Sonbhadra district of Uttar Pradesh, the Minister explained the operational dynamics of Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs). He pointed out that these companies are currently processing crude oil that was acquired at previously higher prices. Because of this, the impact of the recent international price drop will take some time to reflect at the retail fuel stations, while according to Puri, "The companies currently have stocks of crude oil purchased at higher rates. " This indicates that while the global market is cooling down, the domestic transition requires a buffer period to clear existing expensive inventory.

Government Measures and Global Comparisons

Minister Puri also defended the government's management of fuel prices amidst global energy market disruptions and geopolitical tensions, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz. He emphasized that despite these challenges, domestic fuel prices have remained largely stable. He highlighted that the Narendra Modi government reduced central excise duty on petrol and diesel in November 2021, May 2022, and more recently. These reductions meant the government absorbed a burden of approximately 10 Rupees per liter on both fuels to protect consumers from price shocks. Puri noted that among 193 countries in the United Nations, only Japan has seen a lower increase in petroleum prices compared to India. The total increase in petrol and diesel prices in India has been limited to about 7 Rupees 60 Paise, and he claimed there has been no real increase compared to the prices during the Russia-Ukraine conflict in 2022.

Impact of Geopolitical Tensions

The Minister acknowledged that OMCs are currently facing a daily loss of approximately 1000 crore Rupees. However, the government has ensured that the full impact of rising crude prices isn't passed on to the customers. In recent weeks, fuel prices had seen an upward trend as geopolitical tensions in West Asia affected the global energy market. Since the start of the Middle East crisis, petrol and diesel prices rose by about 7 Rupees 50 Paise per liter, with multiple price revisions in a short period. These hikes had raised concerns regarding inflation, transportation costs, and pressure on household budgets, affecting logistics and supply chains. Industry experts have warned that high crude prices and a weak Rupee continue to pressure OMC margins despite recent adjustments.

Current Fuel Prices in Major Metros

As of now, petrol and diesel prices in the four major metropolitan cities remain unchanged. In Delhi, petrol is priced at 102 Rupees 12 Paise and diesel at 95 Rupees 20 Paise per liter. In Kolkata, petrol costs 113 Rupees 51 Paise and diesel is 99 Rupees 82 Paise per liter. Mumbai sees petrol at 111 Rupees 21 Paise and diesel at 97 Rupees 83 Paise per liter. In Chennai, petrol is available at 107 Rupees 77 Paise and diesel at 99 Rupees 55 Paise per liter. The potential reduction hinted at by the Minister would bring much-needed relief to residents in these cities and across the nation.
