The fuel consumption patterns in the national capital are witnessing a significant shift as a growing number of vehicle owners are pivoting towards premium high-octane petrol. This trend is largely driven by emerging concerns and discussions surrounding E20 petrol, which contains a 20 percent ethanol blend. According to various sources, motorists are increasingly opting for specialized fuels such as IndianOil’s XP95 and XP100, as well as Bharat Petroleum’s Speed 97, leading to a substantial surge in their sales across Delhi's fuel stations.

Significant Jump in Premium Fuel Sales

The impact of this shift is most visible at petrol pumps located in the upscale and posh localities of Delhi, while reports suggest that the demand for premium petrol has doubled in many areas, while some high-end fuel stations have recorded a five-fold increase in sales. For instance, at one specific petrol pump in Delhi, the daily sale of XP95 has jumped from approximately 1000 liters to a range between 1500 and 1700 liters. Even more striking is the growth of XP100, which has seen its daily consumption rise from about 100 liters to nearly 500 liters. This surge is primarily attributed to owners of luxury and high-performance vehicles who are prioritizing engine longevity and performance over standard fuel options.

Government Dismisses Engine Damage Claims

In response to the growing apprehension among consumers, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has stepped forward to clarify the situation. The ministry has categorically rejected claims circulating on social media and other platforms suggesting that E20 petrol causes damage to vehicle engines or leads to a drastic reduction in fuel efficiency. Official statements emphasize that the E20 program was implemented only after rigorous testing and extensive consultations with automobile manufacturers, oil marketing companies, and specialized testing agencies. The government maintains that E20-compatible vehicles are specifically engineered to run efficiently on this blended fuel without any adverse effects on durability.

Economic and Environmental Benefits of Ethanol Blending

Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri has previously reassured the public that no significant negative impact on engine performance or longevity has been observed in E20-compliant vehicles. Beyond the technical aspects, the government has highlighted the massive economic advantages of the ethanol blending initiative. 97 lakh crore rupees in foreign exchange for the country. Also, it has led to a reduction in crude oil imports by 316 lakh metric tonnes. 66 lakh crore rupees being paid out to farmers. While the production of E20 petrol is currently more expensive than conventional petrol due to the high cost of ethanol, the government views it as a strategic move to enhance India's energy security and reduce its heavy reliance on imported crude oil.
