The controversy surrounding the NEET-UG 2026 examination has taken a significant political turn as the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, launched a direct and scathing attack on the central government. Expressing deep concern over the integrity of the national-level medical entrance exam, Gandhi stated that the future of 22 lakh students has been compromised. He has formally demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi take immediate action by removing Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan from his post, holding him responsible for the massive failure in the examination system.
The Plight of 22 Lakh Students
Rahul Gandhi highlighted the immense hard work put in by students over the last 2 years. He pointed out that these 22 lakh aspirants dedicate their lives to preparing for this competitive exam, only to see their efforts go to waste due to administrative negligence and corruption. Through a video shared on his social media handle X, Gandhi emphasized that the entire nation is now aware of the gravity of the situation. He alleged that the NEET paper was being circulated and distributed on WhatsApp as early as two days before the scheduled examination date, making a mockery of the security protocols.
Allegations of a Political Nexus
The Leader of the Opposition didn't mince words when he accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) of being part of a larger nexus that facilitates such leaks. According to Gandhi, this isn't an isolated incident but part of a recurring pattern. He claimed that there have been 80 instances of paper leaks in the country, which have collectively ruined the career prospects of approximately 2 crore young individuals. He criticized the Education Minister's response to the crisis, noting that Dharmendra Pradhan has distanced himself from the responsibility by stating he has nothing to do with the matter.
Exclusion of the Opposition
Rahul Gandhi also raised concerns about the lack of transparency in the government's handling of the issue, while he revealed that a committee had previously recommended the inclusion of opposition members to ensure a fair oversight process. However, he alleged that the government summarily rejected this recommendation, effectively throwing it into the dustbin. Gandhi argued that by ignoring the opposition and failing to protect the examination process, the government has damaged the very core and center of India's educational foundation. He called for the immediate arrest and imprisonment of those found guilty in the paper leak scandal.
Exam Timeline and Investigation Details
5 lakh students participating. Following widespread allegations of paper leaks and irregularities, the National Testing Agency (NTA) was forced to cancel the examination. A subsequent investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has already made significant headway, uncovering a criminal gang operating out of Rajasthan. Several arrests have been made in connection with the leak, while as a result of these developments, the re-examination is now scheduled to be held on June 21. In response to the growing pressure, Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has announced that from next year, the NEET examination will transition to a Computer Based Test (CBT) format to prevent such incidents in the future.
