In a significant political development that has intensified the ongoing debate over electoral integrity, a high-level delegation of the INDIA alliance, led by the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, met with President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Friday. The meeting was convened to formally register the opposition's grave concerns regarding the current electoral process, specifically focusing on the demand to abolish Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and reinstate the use of ballot papers for all future elections, while during the interaction, the opposition leaders also brought to the President's attention the controversial issue of what they termed as vote theft and raised specific concerns regarding the conduct and appointment of Chief Election Commissioner CEC Gyanesh Kumar.

The Delegation and the Meeting at Rashtrapati Bhavan

The delegation that entered the gates of Rashtrapati Bhavan comprised several prominent leaders from various constituent parties of the INDIA alliance. The list of leaders who met President Droupadi Murmu included Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, Supriya Sule, Mamata Banerjee, Rajiv Rai, Manoj Jha, MA Baby, D. Raja, and Omar Abdullah. These leaders moved directly from the Central Hall of Parliament to Rashtrapati Bhavan to present their grievances. Following the conclusion of the meeting, Rahul Gandhi addressed the media and shared insights into the discussion, while he stated that the President didn't deny the talk regarding vote theft during their conversation. He further emphasized that the opposition is prepared to provide concrete evidence to support their claims of electoral irregularities. Mallikarjun Kharge, speaking alongside the delegation, reiterated the alliance's firm and collective stance on the removal of EVMs, asserting that a transition back to ballot papers is essential for maintaining the sanctity and transparency of the democratic process in India.

Protests at Vijay Chowk and Leader Statements

While the small delegation of 10 leaders was inside meeting the President, a large number of opposition Members of Parliament staged a protest at Vijay Chowk. These MPs sat in a dharna to show their solidarity with the demands being presented at Rashtrapati Bhavan, while during this period of protest, several leaders voiced their opinions on the current political climate. Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi expressed his support for those protesting, stating that all patriots are dedicated to strengthening the country's democracy, regardless of their political affiliations, while he specifically saluted the patriots who have taken to the streets to voice their concerns. Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivkumar also made a strong statement, clarifying the alliance's objectives. He stated that they want voting to be conducted via ballot papers and specifically called for the removal of CEC Gyanesh Kumar from his position.

Allegations of Government Fear and Public Hardship

Congress MP Rajiv Shukla provided further context to the protest march, suggesting that the government is acting out of fear. He explained that the march was necessary because all the opposition MPs weren't granted time to meet the President together. According to Shukla, only 10 leaders from the INDIA alliance were given an appointment, which prompted the rest of the MPs to organize a protest march. He criticized the government for the extensive restrictions placed on the city, noting that the public has faced significant difficulties due to the closure of metro stations, trains, and buses. Shukla also pointed out that entry into Delhi has been restricted. He mentioned that even the Supreme Court had to intervene and question why such a total ban and widespread shutdowns were being implemented, highlighting the severity of the situation and the government's response to the opposition's movement.
