Following a monumental political shift in West Bengal, the process of establishing the new government and streamlining legislative procedures has reached a decisive stage. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has officially announced its nominee for the prestigious post of Speaker of the 18th West Bengal Legislative Assembly. Rathindra Bose, a first-time MLA elected from the Cooch Behar South constituency, has been named for this critical constitutional role. This appointment is a cornerstone of the BJP's new administrative framework in the state, reflecting the party's strategy to entrust the management of house proceedings to a highly qualified professional.

Rathindra Bose: Professional Credentials and Academic Excellence

Before his foray into active politics, Rathindra Bose built a long and distinguished career in the professional sector. He's a practicing Chartered Accountant (CA) by profession and continues to maintain his practice. Mr. Bose earned his professional degree from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) in 1990. His academic and professional expertise extends beyond chartered accountancy, as he's also a qualified Cost Accountant (ICWAI). His decades of experience in finance, accounting, and auditing are expected to be invaluable in managing the complex legislative rules and financial oversight functions of the state assembly.

Electoral Debut and Landmark Victory

Rathindra Bose contested his maiden assembly election in 2026 from the Cooch Behar South seat. In a remarkable debut performance, he secured a resounding victory with a margin exceeding 23,000 votes. Despite being a first-time legislator, his professional standing, deep understanding of financial matters, and steadfast loyalty to the party prompted the BJP leadership to select him for the Speaker's chair, while amidst the significant political transition in West Bengal, Bose's role will be pivotal in maintaining decorum within the house and ensuring a fair balance between the treasury and opposition benches.

Suvendu Adhikari’s Cabinet and Administrative Structure

With the BJP's landslide victory in the West Bengal Assembly elections, Suvendu Adhikari has taken charge as the state's first-ever BJP Chief Minister. To ensure a solid and efficient administration, he has constituted a comprehensive cabinet consisting of 42 ministers. This council of ministers includes 24 Cabinet Ministers and 18 Ministers of State, ensuring representation for various regions and communities across the state. Suvendu Adhikari was sworn in as the Chief Minister on May 9 during a grand ceremony at the Raj Bhavan, where the Governor administered the oath of office and secrecy, marking the beginning of a new governance era in the state.

Strategic Decisions: Bhawanipur and Nandigram Seats

Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari recently made a significant strategic announcement regarding his legislative representation. He declared his intention to resign from the Nandigram assembly seat while retaining the Bhawanipur assembly seat, while it's important to note that he contested from two high-profile seats—Nandigram and Bhawanipur—and achieved victory in both. In Bhawanipur, he achieved a major political milestone by defeating the Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief and former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in her own stronghold. While he also maintained his winning streak in Nandigram, he has ultimately chosen to represent the Bhawanipur constituency in the assembly.

The formation of the new government in West Bengal is now being complemented by the finalization of the legislative leadership. With Rathindra Bose set to take over as the Speaker, the assembly will benefit from a leader who possesses a profound understanding of financial and legal intricacies. Under the leadership of Suvendu Adhikari and his 42-member cabinet, the state has embarked on a new path of governance, where the Speaker's role will be essential in ensuring that the legislative process remains disciplined, transparent, and orderly.
