The political landscape of Maharashtra is witnessing an intense verbal showdown between Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray. As both factions celebrated the 60th foundation day of the Shiv Sena separately, the rivalry reached a new peak with leaders using metaphors ranging from tigers and lions to dogs and even references to the iconic Bollywood film Sholay. This escalation comes at a critical juncture for the Uddhav Thackeray-led faction, which is reportedly facing a fresh wave of internal rebellion and potential defections.

Shinde's Metaphorical Attack: Tigers, Lions, and Dogs

Addressing a massive gathering of party workers in Mumbai, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde positioned his faction as the true successor to Bal Thackeray's political legacy. Shinde used sharp metaphors to target his opponents, stating that what the public is seeing now is just a trailer and the full movie is yet to come. He proclaimed that a tiger stands before the people today, while some dogs continue to bark. He remarked that while dogs bark in packs, a lion always arrives alone. Shinde further added that dogs keep barking while the tiger hunts and roars, asserting that this is the real Shiv Sena that stands strong in Maharashtra today.

The Sholay Reference and Urdu Couplet

Shinde didn't stop at animal metaphors; he also invoked the legendary Bollywood film Sholay to mock his rivals. Referencing the famous dialogue by the character Asrani, Shinde took a dig at the dwindling support in the Thackeray camp, while he suggested that while some leaders used to have followers behind them, they're now left alone as people continue to desert them. To further emphasize his point, he recited an Urdu couplet: "Tumhare paon ke neeche koi zameen nahi, kamaal ye hai ki phir bhi tumhe yakeen nahi" (There is no ground beneath your feet, yet it's amazing that you still don't believe it). He questioned why workers and leaders were leaving the rival faction, urging them to engage in self-reflection and introspection.

Crisis in Shiv Sena (UBT): Potential Defections

This political escalation comes at a time when the Shiv Sena (UBT) is facing a significant internal crisis. Reports indicate that out of the 9 Lok Sabha MPs currently with Uddhav Thackeray, as many as 6 are expected to join the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena. This potential move threatens to further deepen the rift that first transformed Maharashtra's political landscape in 2022, when Shinde rebelled against Thackeray's leadership and eventually secured the party name and the iconic bow and arrow election symbol.

Uddhav Thackeray's Emotional Response

In response to the growing rebellion and the verbal onslaught, Uddhav Thackeray made an emotional appeal to his party workers, while speaking at his faction's foundation day event, the former Chief Minister expressed his willingness to step down from his post if the workers no longer had faith in his leadership. Thackeray stated that if the members felt he was no longer fit to lead, he was ready to hand over the reins of the party to any dedicated worker. He clarified that he wouldn't cling to power but vowed to continue the fight for the party's core ideology. However, he issued a stern warning to his followers, urging them not to let the Shiv Sena fall into the hands of "thieves and traitors," a direct reference to the Shinde faction.
