The Supreme Court of India has taken a very stern view of comedian Samay Raina's conduct during judicial proceedings. The apex court expressed its deep displeasure over the alleged non-compliance with its previous directives and has imposed a fine of 3 lakh on him. Raina has been ordered to deposit this amount within a period of 2 weeks. This decision comes after the court observed that the comedian had attempted to mislead the bench and provided false statements during the hearings.

Initially, the Supreme Court had imposed a much heavier fine of 10 lakh on Samay Raina. However, this amount was later reduced to 3 lakh, with a strict instruction that it must be paid on time. The court's order also extended to other comedians who were part of the controversial episode of the show 'India's Got Latent', directing each of them to pay a fine of 3 lakh. The bench made it clear that failure to comply with this order within the stipulated timeframe would result in severe legal consequences for Samay Raina.

Court Observations on Misleading Statements

The bench noted that Samay Raina didn't take the judicial process seriously. According to the court, Raina misled the Supreme Court during the proceedings and made statements that were found to be factually incorrect. The bench emphasized that such behavior can't be ignored, leading to the initial 10 lakh fine. The court warned that Raina had taken the legal system lightly and that his statements before the bench weren't truthful.

The 'India's Got Latent' Controversy

This legal battle is linked to the proceedings following FIRs registered against the show 'India's Got Latent' for allegedly making offensive remarks. According to reports from 'Bar and Bench', the case also involves YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia. Previously, a stay had been placed on Allahbadia's show, which was later lifted after he committed to creating awareness programs involving people with disabilities.

During the hearing, Advocate Aparajita Singh raised serious concerns about Raina's conduct. She stated that it felt unpleasant even to discuss his show, noting that he invites people with disabilities to specific locations for his performances. She expressed her disdain, mentioning that people like Samay Raina are considered icons for the youth, which she found disturbing. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta echoed these sentiments, remarking that the youth of the country have much better icons to look up to.

CJI B.R. Gavai's Stern Warning

R. Gavai was particularly critical of Raina's actions. He stated that Samay Raina had misled the court and shamelessly violated its orders, while the Chief Justice pointed out that the misconduct was aggravated by the filing of an affidavit despite there being nothing on record to support the claims. He further warned that if an individual doesn't know how to improve their behavior or respect the sentiments of society, they must face the consequences. Consequently, the bench directed the payment of the fine within two weeks.

Background of the Dispute

The entire controversy stems from an episode of Samay Raina's show 'India's Got Latent' aired in January 2025. In this episode, YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia reportedly made offensive comments regarding parents. The upload of this episode on YouTube triggered widespread outrage and criticism. Following the backlash, multiple FIRs were filed against Samay Raina, leading him to remove all episodes of the show from YouTube and other platforms.

Recently, Samay Raina made a comeback with 'India's Got Latent 2', which has already sparked new controversies. A video of Raina went viral following the '370 Biryani' controversy involving stand-up comedian Praneet More. In this video, Raina was seen making jokes about heart attacks, which once again made him a target for online trolling and criticism.
