In a significant political development in West Bengal, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari expanded his cabinet on Monday, nearly a month after the formation of the new government, while the swearing-in ceremony took place at Lok Bhavan, where 35 leaders were inducted into the council of ministers. This expansion marks a crucial step in the administration's efforts to solidify its governance structure following the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) decisive victory in the recent assembly elections, which brought an end to the 15 year rule of the Trinamool Congress.

The New Cabinet Inductees

The expansion saw a diverse group of leaders taking the oath of office. Among the most notable names is Ashok Dinda, a former fast bowler for the Indian national cricket team who transitioned into politics and won the election from the Moyna assembly seat. Dinda has been appointed as a Minister of State. Other prominent figures who took the oath include Tapas Roy and Swapan Dasgupta, both of whom have been assigned key roles within the cabinet. The ceremony at Lok Bhavan was attended by various dignitaries as the 35 new ministers officially joined the government.

Cabinet Strength and Key Appointments

With this latest expansion, the total number of ministers in the Suvendu Adhikari cabinet has risen to 41. It's important to recall that Suvendu Adhikari took the oath as Chief Minister on May 9, following the BJP's electoral success. On that day, 5 other ministers also took their oaths, including Dilip Ghosh, Nisith Pramanik, Agnimitra Paul, Ashok Kirtania, and K. Tudu. The addition of 35 more ministers on Monday Importantly strengthens the executive branch of the state government.

Distribution of Ministerial Ranks

The newly inducted ministers have been divided into different categories, including Cabinet Ministers, Ministers of State (MoS), and Ministers with Independent Charge. The leaders appointed as Cabinet Ministers include Swapan Dasgupta, Arjun Singh, Deepak Barman, Tapas Roy, Jagannath Chatterjee, Manoj Kumar Oram, Gauri Shankar Ghosh, and Ajay Poddar. While their specific departments are yet to be officially allocated, their inclusion in the cabinet signifies their importance in the new administration.

The list of Ministers of State includes Ashok Dinda, Jewel Murmu, Harikrishna Bera, Shantanu Pramanik, Umesh Roy, Purnima Chakraborty, Bhaskar Bhattacharya, Kalita Maji, Biraj Biswas, Anandamay Barman, Vishal Lama, and Dipankar Jana. Also, Malti Rava Rai, Rajesh Mahto, and Indranil Khan have been appointed as Ministers with Independent Charge, giving them specific administrative responsibilities.

Existing Portfolios and Responsibilities

Prior to this expansion, several key portfolios had already been assigned to the initial group of ministers. Dilip Ghosh is currently serving as the Minister for Panchayat and Rural Development, Animal Husbandry Development, and Agriculture Marketing. Agnimitra Paul has been entrusted with the departments of Women and Child Welfare as well as Urban and Rural Development. Nisith Pramanik holds the responsibility for North Bengal Development and the Sports department. Ashok Kirtania is in charge of the Food Department, while Khudiram Tudu (K. Tudu) serves as the Minister for Backward Classes Welfare and Minority Affairs. The allocation of departments for the 35 new ministers is expected to be announced shortly, completing the administrative setup of the West Bengal government.
