In a significant move aimed at women's empowerment and administrative reforms, the West Bengal state cabinet, under the leadership of Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, convened a crucial meeting on Monday. This meeting resulted in several landmark decisions that are set to reshape the socio-economic landscape of the state. The cabinet has officially announced the implementation dates for various welfare schemes, including direct financial assistance for women and enhancements in public transport facilities.

Annapurna Scheme: Financial Support for Women

One of the most prominent highlights of the cabinet meeting is the formal approval of the Annapurna Scheme. Under this ambitious initiative, the state government has pledged to provide a monthly financial assistance of 3000 rupees to the women of West Bengal. State Minister Agnimitra Paul, while briefing the media about the cabinet's proceedings, confirmed that the financial aid under the Annapurna Scheme will commence from June 1 2026. This move is seen as a major step towards providing financial independence to women across the state.

Free Bus Travel and Transport Reforms

In addition to the direct cash transfers, the Suvendu Adhikari-led government has also focused on improving mobility for women. The cabinet has granted its approval for free travel for women in all government-operated buses. This facility is scheduled to be implemented starting from June 1. By providing free access to state-run transport, the government aims to facilitate easier commuting for women, whether for work, education, or personal needs, thereby reducing their daily travel expenses.

Seventh State Pay Commission and Employee Welfare

The cabinet meeting also brought positive news for state government employees, while minister Agnimitra Paul informed that the West Bengal government has approved the constitution of the Seventh State Pay Commission. This commission will cater to the employees of the state government, affiliated statutory bodies, and various educational institutions. The formation of the 7th Pay Commission is expected to address the long-standing demands regarding salary structures and benefits for the state's workforce.

Policy Changes and Social Inclusion

A significant policy shift was also decided during the Monday meeting. The West Bengal cabinet has resolved to discontinue government assistance provided to groups based on religious classification. This decision will come into effect from the month of June, while On top of that, the government has extended the benefits of the Annapurna Scheme to specific groups involved in the citizenship process. Minister Paul stated that members of tribunals formed for those applying for citizenship under the CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act) and those seeking inclusion in the voter list will also be eligible to receive benefits under the Annapurna Scheme.

The series of decisions taken by the Suvendu cabinet reflects the government's focus on fulfilling its electoral promises and implementing a governance model centered on welfare and administrative efficiency. With the announcement of specific dates for the 3000 rupees monthly aid and free bus travel, the state administration has set a clear timeline for its upcoming welfare projects.
