The Trinamool Congress (TMC) is currently facing an unprecedented internal crisis as a significant faction of its parliamentary members has openly rebelled against the party leadership. In a development that has sent shockwaves through the political landscape of both West Bengal and Delhi, 20 Lok Sabha MPs from the TMC have reportedly written a formal letter to the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, Om Birla. This move indicates a major split within the party, following closely on the heels of a similar rebellion by the party's legislators in the state assembly. The rebelling MPs are reportedly considering the formation of a separate group or even a new political entity, given that they appear to have the necessary numbers to sustain a separate block in the house.

Support for the NDA and Strategic Shift

The rebellion took a concrete turn when Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, a prominent face within the party, confirmed the shift in allegiance. According to her, approximately 20 TMC MPs, including herself, have decided to extend their support to the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The MPs have formally communicated their desire to align with the NDA to Speaker Om Birla. Dastidar emphasized that this decision stems from an acceptance of the recent election results in West Bengal. She stated that the group believes their future political path must be charted alongside the NDA to better reflect the mandate and ensure a stable political direction. This declaration has added to the growing concerns for Mamata Banerjee, who is currently in the national capital.

Secret Meetings in Delhi

The political turmoil within the TMC, which began in West Bengal, has now manifested prominently in Delhi. While TMC chief Mamata Banerjee is in the capital to attend the INDIA block meeting, a group of rebel MPs held a secret meeting in the city. According to party sources, this informal gathering saw the participation of about 20 MPs. The timing of this meeting is particularly significant as it coincided with Mamata Banerjee's visit, where she was expected to assess the situation of her party's parliamentary wing. Sources further revealed that some of the MPs who attended the meeting on Sunday remained in contact on Monday, holding further discussions at a central government office in Delhi. This sequence of events highlights the depth of the coordination among the dissenting members.

Background of the Assembly Rebellion

This parliamentary revolt follows an earlier blow to the party's unity in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly. Just days prior, the TMC legislative party witnessed an unprecedented rebellion following the party's performance in the assembly elections, while in a major setback for the leadership, 58 MLAs supported Ritabrata Banerjee for the position of Leader of the Opposition, effectively rejecting the party's official candidate, Shovandeb Chattopadhyay. This internal defiance at the state level appears to have set the stage for the current crisis in the Lok Sabha. The fact that 20 MPs have now moved to support the NDA suggests that the dissatisfaction within the party is widespread and spans across both the state and national levels of representation. The leadership now faces the daunting task of managing this dual rebellion as the possibility of a formal split looms large.
