TMC Internal Crisis Deepens: Is West Bengal Heading Towards A Maharashtra Style Political Split?
विज्ञापन

The political landscape of West Bengal is currently witnessing significant turbulence as the Trinamool Congress (TMC) grapples with intense internal strife. While the party's supremo, Mamata Banerjee, has taken to the streets to protest against alleged attacks on her nephew, a much larger storm seems to be brewing within the party ranks. The whispers of a Maharashtra Model are growing louder, suggesting a potential split that could mirror the political upheaval seen in Maharashtra's recent history. This internal conflict has come to the forefront just about a month after the formation of the new government in the state.

Protest at Rani Rashmoni Avenue

On Tuesday, Mamata Banerjee led a massive demonstration at Kolkata's Rani Rashmoni Avenue, directed against the government of Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, while the primary motivation behind this protest was the demand for strict action against those responsible for the attacks on Member of Parliament Abhishek Banerjee and Kalyan Banerjee. Mamata Banerjee has accused the current administration of failing to take necessary steps against the perpetrators. Despite the Kolkata Police denying permission for the demonstration, the former Chief Minister remained steadfast, continuing her sit-in alongside a large number of supporters. During the protest, she made startling claims, stating that MLAs are being threatened at their homes. She further alleged that she possesses recordings of conversations related to the attempted attack on Abhishek Banerjee, where phrases like mar-mar (hit-hit) can be clearly heard.

The Growing Rebellion and the Maharashtra Model

Beyond the public protests, the real challenge for the TMC lies in the growing dissent among its legislators. Reports indicate that a group of dissatisfied TMC MLAs has been holding independent meetings, claiming the support of approximately 50 to 60 legislators. This development has led to widespread speculation about the implementation of the Maharashtra Model in West Bengal. This model refers to the political strategy employed by Eknath Shinde in Maharashtra, where he rebelled against the leadership of Uddhav Thackeray, took a significant number of MLAs with him to form a separate faction, and eventually claimed the party's original symbol. There are growing fears within the TMC that a similar scenario might be unfolding in Bengal.

The Forgery Allegation and CID Investigation

The roots of this rebellion can be traced back to the selection process for the Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly. The name of Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay was proposed for the position, but the process was immediately marred by controversy. Allegations surfaced that the signatures of several MLAs on the proposal letter were forged. Two TMC MLAs formally lodged a complaint with the Assembly Speaker regarding this matter, which subsequently triggered an investigation by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). In a swift move, the party expelled the two MLAs who had filed the complaint. However, this expulsion seems to have backfired, as it only intensified the anger within the party. The depth of the crisis became evident when Mamata Banerjee called a meeting of MLAs on Sunday, which was reportedly attended by only 20 legislators, while approximately 60 others remained absent, reportedly working on an alternative strategy.

Statements from Rebel Leaders and the BJP

Suspended leader Riju Dutta has been vocal about the rebellion, stating that the dissident MLAs are in the process of approaching the Speaker. He claimed that nearly 50 MLAs are with them and that they represent the real TMC. He also suggested that Ritabrata Banerjee would be their choice for the Leader of the Opposition. On the other hand, West Bengal BJP President Samik Bhattacharya commented on the situation, stating that the people of Bengal wouldn't allow Mamata Banerjee to continue her protests. He noted that members of the TMC themselves are now raising their voices against the party leadership. Interestingly, he added that the doors of the BJP are currently closed for TMC members. Adding to the party's woes, the CID has intensified its probe into the signature forgery case and has issued a notice to Abhishek Banerjee for questioning, marking another significant blow to the party's top leadership.
