In a significant legal development, Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Jahangir Khan, popularly known by his moniker Pushpa, has been dealt a major blow by the judiciary, while following his apprehension at the Indo-Nepal border, he was produced before the Diamond Harbour Court, which subsequently remanded him to police custody for a period of 5 days. Jahangir Khan, a prominent political figure from the Falta region in the South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, had been on the run for several weeks before his eventual capture by law enforcement agencies.

The Arrest at the Indo-Nepal Border

The arrest of Jahangir Khan took place on Monday near the international border between India and Nepal in North Bengal. According to police reports, Khan had been successfully evading the authorities since the declaration of the West Bengal assembly election results. He was facing serious allegations, including charges of extortion and criminal intimidation. Despite multiple raids conducted by the police at various locations, he had managed to remain at large. Acting on specific intelligence inputs that suggested he was attempting to flee the country, a specialized team intercepted him near the border, bringing his period of evasion to an end.

Legal Battle and High Court Intervention

The legal troubles for Jahangir Khan intensified after the Calcutta High Court intervened in his case. Previously, the court had granted him interim protection from arrest, which had kept the police at bay. However, this protection was officially withdrawn by the court on 26 May. Once the legal shield was removed, the police administration moved into high gear to secure his arrest. Realizing that he no longer had judicial immunity, Khan attempted to escape, leading to the high-stakes chase that concluded at the North Bengal border.

The Pushpa Persona and Challenge to IPS Officer

Jahangir Khan gained national media attention during the Bengal elections due to his defiant attitude. He famously challenged Ajay Pal Sharma, a sharp IPS officer of the UP cadre who was deployed in the region to maintain law and order. In a cinematic style, Khan referred to himself as Pushpa, a character from a popular film, and declared that he wouldn't bow down to anyone. This incident led to him being widely referred to as the Pushpa of Falta in political and media circles. However, following the tightening of the legal noose, the leader is now in police custody facing interrogation.

Election Turmoil in Falta

The Falta assembly constituency has been a center of political controversy. During the initial voting on 29 April, widespread complaints of EVM tampering and electoral malpractice were reported. Consequently, the Election Commission declared the polls null and void and ordered a re-poll on 21 May. In a dramatic turn of events, the TMC candidate Jahangir Khan withdrew from the race just before the re-polling, while the subsequent election was held under the strict supervision of central security forces. The results saw BJP candidate Debangshu Panda securing a massive victory with a record margin of 1,09,021 votes. The CPI-M candidate finished in second place, while the TMC lost its deposit in the seat.
