In a significant development within Maharashtra's political landscape, Uddhav Thackeray has faced a substantial setback as the Lok Sabha Speaker officially recognized the transition of six rebel Members of Parliament from the Shiv Sena (UBT) to the Eknath Shinde-led faction. This move marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing struggle for control over the party's identity and representation in the national legislature.
Speaker Om Birla Grants Official Recognition
The Lok Sabha Speaker, Om Birla, has formally granted approval for the six rebel MPs from the UBT faction to join the Shinde-led Shiv Sena, while this decision follows a period of political maneuvering and formal requests submitted to the Lok Sabha Secretariat. With the official nod from the Secretariat, the path for these rebel MPs to integrate into the Shinde faction has been cleared, effectively altering the composition of the lower house of Parliament.
Following this landmark decision by the Speaker, the numerical strength of the Shinde faction in the Lok Sabha has seen a notable increase. The group now commands a total of 13 MPs in the lower house, Importantly bolstering their legislative presence and influence at the national level.
The Six Rebel MPs and Their Constituencies
The six MPs who have broken away from the Shiv Sena (UBT) to join the Shinde faction had previously faced opposition from Uddhav Thackeray regarding their merger.
- Sanjay Jadhav, representing the Parbhani constituency.
- Sanjay Dina Patil, representing the Mumbai North-East constituency.
- Omraj Nimbalkar, representing the Osmanabad/Dharashiv constituency.
- Nagesh Patil Ashtikar, representing the Hingoli constituency.
- Sanjay Uttamrao Deshmukh, representing the Yavatmal-Washim constituency.
- Bhau Saheb Wakchaure, representing the Shirdi constituency.
CM Eknath Shinde on Operation Tiger
Reacting to the success of what has been termed Operation Tiger, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde expressed his views on the development. He stated, "Those who are joining us are doing so because of trust. Whether it's the MPs or the many others who have joined us over the last 3-4 years, they've full faith in the Shiv Sena, in me, and in our team.
He further emphasized the faction's philosophy, saying, "We don't work to break parties or create divisions, while we're people who bring others together. We're here to provide justice to the people of their constituencies and to fulfill their responsibilities towards the public.
Setback for Mamata Banerjee and TMC
In a parallel development that has sent ripples through the political corridors, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has also faced a setback, while the Speaker has approved a separate seating arrangement in the Lok Sabha for 20 MPs who left the Trinamool Congress (TMC) to merge with the NCPI. The NCPI has been granted the status of a separate group within the house.
Adding to the significance of this shift, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju has extended an invitation to Sudip Bandyopadhyay and Kakoli Ghosh to attend an all-party meeting in their capacity as NCPI leaders. This decision is being viewed as a major blow to Mamata Banerjee's influence within the national legislative framework.
