A major global survey conducted by the Pew Research Center, recognized as the world's largest think tank for public opinion, has released its latest findings which indicate a significant shift in international perceptions of global powers. The report highlights that India's popularity is reaching unprecedented levels in several key nations, most notably in the United Kingdom, while according to the survey, 71 percent of people in Britain now have a positive view of India, making it one of the most liked nations in the region. This rise in India's global standing stands in stark contrast to the declining image of the United States, where trust has reached a record low level under the current administration.
The Impact of Donald Trump on America's Global Image
The Pew Research survey suggests that the decline in America's international reputation is largely attributed to the actions and statements of President Donald Trump. The report notes that Trump's decision to impose a 50 percent tariff on Indian goods, combined with his frequent controversial and erratic statements, has caused widespread dissatisfaction not only in India but across the globe. This approach has led to a perception of the United States as being increasingly unpopular and unpredictable. The survey reveals that the frequent policy reversals and what is described as 'bullying' tactics have caused even the American public to lose faith in their own government, with 83 percent of Americans expressing disillusionment with their country's leadership.
Global Ratings for India Across Different Nations
The data released by the Pew Research Center provides a detailed look at how various countries perceive India. In Germany, 63 percent of the population holds a positive opinion of India. In Israel, the approval rating for India stands at 60 percent. Other nations also show significant support, with 56 percent in Italy, 55 percent in Japan, and 51 percent in Canada expressing a liking for India. Even within the United States, 45 percent of the people maintain a good opinion of India. Among neighboring countries, Sri Lanka shows the highest level of support for India, with a rating of 79 percent. These figures suggest that India's influence and positive perception are growing steadily across Europe, Asia, and North America.
Negative Perceptions of Trump and the Rise of China
In contrast to India's rising popularity, the global opinion of President Donald Trump has hit a record low. Pew Research surveyed 36 countries regarding their views on Trump, and the results were described as shocking. Only eight countries reported a positive opinion of the US President. In nations such as the United Kingdom, France, Australia, Mexico, Canada, Spain, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, Sweden, and Turkey, the public sentiment toward Trump is overwhelmingly negative. Interestingly, the survey found that more people expressed trust in Chinese President Xi Jinping than in Donald Trump. This shift is even visible among the American youth and neighboring countries of the US, who are beginning to view China more favorably despite the ongoing tariff wars initiated by the Trump administration.
India's Perspective on Global Partners
The survey also delved into the opinions of the Indian public regarding their most reliable global partners. The findings show that 36 percent of Indians consider Russia to be their country's most trustworthy global ally. In comparison, only 16 percent of Indians hold the same view of the United States. This data reflects a significant gap in trust between India and the US at the public level. On top of that, the report mentions that in previous surveys of popular global leaders, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had secured the top position, receiving much higher approval ratings than other world leaders.
