Ukraine has executed a significant and large-scale drone offensive deep inside Russian territory, targeting critical logistics hubs, warehouses, and energy infrastructure. This coordinated aerial assault has resulted in the deaths of at least 9 individuals and left more than 80 others injured. According to Russian officials and reports from the affected regions, the strikes specifically targeted facilities belonging to Wildberries, a major Russian online retailer, as well as an oil depot and various military-linked logistical sites, while the Ukrainian government has asserted that these locations were integral components of the Russian military's supply chain, facilitating the ongoing conflict.
Devastation at Wildberries Warehouses in Tambov and Moscow
The first major strike occurred at a Wildberries warehouse located in Kotovsk, within the Tambov region. This site is situated approximately 360 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. Governor Yevgeny Perivshov of the Tambov region confirmed that the attack took place during a night shift, leading to the deaths of 7 employees who were working at the facility. Also, 25 people sustained various injuries during this incident. The scale of the damage at this logistics hub has highlighted the reach of Ukrainian drone capabilities far beyond the immediate border zones.
A second significant strike targeted another Wildberries warehouse in Elektrostal, located about 50 kilometers east of Moscow. Andrei Vorobyov, the Governor of the Moscow region, reported that 61 people were injured in this particular attack. Out of the total injured, 40 individuals required immediate hospitalization due to the severity of their wounds. It was later confirmed that one of the hospitalized victims succumbed to their injuries, bringing the death toll from this specific site to one. The proximity of this strike to the Russian capital has raised serious concerns regarding the vulnerability of industrial infrastructure near major urban centers.
Attacks on Oil Depots and Civilian Infrastructure
Simultaneously, Ukrainian drones targeted an oil depot in Noginsk, causing a massive fire to break out at the facility. The intensity of the situation forced local authorities to take emergency measures, including the evacuation of a nearby maternity hospital and a residential building to ensure the safety of civilians. During the engagement, drone debris reportedly fell onto a kindergarten, sparking a fire at the educational facility, while fortunately, emergency services were able to bring the fire under control. In a separate incident on Saturday afternoon, another Ukrainian drone strike in the Belgorod region resulted in the death of one person and left another individual injured.
Strategic Justification from Ukraine
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the strikes, stating that the logistics centers targeted in the Moscow and Tambov regions were being utilized by Russia to supply restricted foreign components necessary for the production of drones and navigation devices. Zelensky emphasized that these operations are part of a broader strategy to disrupt the Russian military's technical and logistical capabilities, while On top of that, he noted that Ukraine's special forces conducted additional strikes on military targets within the Sea of Azov and other Russian-occupied territories.
The Ukrainian military further claimed that the Noginsk oil depot was a primary source of fuel for Russian armed forces. In addition to the land-based targets, Ukraine reported successful strikes against maritime assets in the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov. These targets included two tankers, two floating cranes, and a tugboat. A Project 10410 Svetlyak-class patrol ship was also reportedly attacked in Kerch. In the occupied Luhansk region, a railway bridge over the Bila River near Sabivka was targeted. This bridge was identified as a critical route for the transportation of Russian military equipment and weaponry.
Russian Defense Response
The Russian Ministry of Defense issued a statement claiming that its air defense systems were active throughout the night, successfully intercepting and destroying 379 Ukrainian drones. These interceptions reportedly took place across 19 different regions, as well as over Crimea, the Sea of Azov, and the Black Sea. Despite these claims of high interception rates, Russian authorities acknowledged that several drones managed to bypass defenses, striking their intended targets and causing significant damage to warehouses, oil depots, transport infrastructure, and other strategic sites.
