The political landscape of Uttar Pradesh witnessed a significant development as all 10 candidates for the Rajya Sabha seats were declared elected unopposed. This outcome came after a series of procedural steps and political decisions that eventually eliminated the possibility of a contested election. Out of the 10 seats that were up for grabs, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) successfully secured 8 seats, while the Samajwadi Party (SP) managed to win 2 seats. The final declaration was made following the expiration of the deadline for the withdrawal of nominations on Friday at 4 PM.

The Nomination Process and Rejections

The election process initially saw a total of 12 nomination papers being filed for the 10 vacant Rajya Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh. Among these 12 nominations, 8 were from the Bharatiya Janata Party, 2 were from the Samajwadi Party, and 2 were filed by independent candidates. However, during the scrutiny process, the nomination papers of both independent candidates were found to be incomplete and were subsequently rejected by the election authorities. This left exactly 10 candidates in the fray for the 10 available seats, paving the way for an unopposed election. Since no candidate withdrew their nomination by the final deadline of 4 PM on Friday, all 10 individuals were officially declared as Rajya Sabha members.

BJP Candidates and Strategic Representation

The Bharatiya Janata Party's selection of candidates reflected a calculated attempt to maintain regional and caste balance ahead of the upcoming assembly elections in the state. The 8 candidates who have now become Rajya Sabha MPs on the BJP ticket include a diverse group of individuals. Among them are two women, highlighting the party's focus on gender representation. The list of successful BJP candidates includes Dharampal Singh, who belongs to the Lodh community and serves as a minister in the Uttar Pradesh government. Other candidates from the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category include Prakash Pal, the state head of the OBC cell, and Shruti Gangwar from the Kurmi community.

The BJP also ensured representation for the Scheduled Castes (SC) by fielding Vidyasagar Sonkar and Priyanka Rawat. From the Kshatriya community, Ram Pratap Singh Chauhan was elected, while the Brahmin community saw representation through Gopi Krishna Pandey and Radhakant Ojha. The nominations for these 8 candidates were filed three days prior, on Tuesday, in the presence of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and several other senior party leaders. The papers were submitted to the election officer Ajit Verma, marking a show of strength for the ruling party.

Samajwadi Party Candidates and Political Stance

The Samajwadi Party secured 2 seats in this Rajya Sabha election. The elected members from the SP are Ram Gopal Yadav, a senior leader and close associate of Akhilesh Yadav, and Dhanraj Parimal Nathwani, a senior official from Reliance Industries. Dhanraj Nathwani emerged as one of the most prominent faces among the winners. Initially, there was intense speculation that the Samajwadi Party might field a third candidate for the biennial elections scheduled for October 16, which would have forced a contest. However, on the final day of filing nominations, the party clarified its position.

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav addressed the situation through a post on the social media platform X, while he clarified that the party wouldn't be fielding a third candidate, stating that their focus is now on all 403 assembly seats rather than just 3 Rajya Sabha seats. This strategic move by the SP leadership ensured that the election remained uncontested, avoiding a potential showdown with the ruling BJP. The decision to field Dhanraj Nathwani, who is associated with the Reliance company, was a notable highlight of the SP's candidate list.

Conclusion of the Election Cycle

With the official declaration of the results, the 10 new members are set to represent Uttar Pradesh in the upper house of Parliament. The process concluded smoothly without the need for actual voting, as the number of valid nominations matched the number of vacancies. The BJP's success in winning 8 seats reinforces its dominant position in the state legislature, while the SP's 2 seats ensure its continued representation. The careful selection of candidates by the BJP, focusing on various communities like Lodh, Pal, Kurmi, SC, Kshatriya, and Brahmin, indicates a long-term strategy for the state's political future. The unopposed election of all 10 candidates marks the end of this Rajya Sabha election cycle in Uttar Pradesh.
