The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has officially released its first list of candidates for the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections. During a press conference held at the party office in Kalighat, Kolkata, TMC supremo and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced the names of candidates for 291 assembly seats. This announcement marks a significant step in the state's electoral proceedings. Banerjee confirmed that she will be contesting from the Bhawanipur constituency. Out of the total 294 seats in the state assembly, the TMC has fielded candidates in 291 constituencies, leaving the remaining three seats for its regional allies.

The Political Dynamics of Bhawanipur and Nandigram

The decision by Mamata Banerjee to contest from Bhawanipur sets the stage for a high-profile electoral battle. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has already released its initial list, naming Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, as the candidate for both Bhawanipur and Nandigram. Historically, Suvendu Adhikari defeated Mamata Banerjee in the Nandigram seat during the previous assembly elections, while following that defeat, Banerjee secured her position in the assembly by winning the Bhawanipur seat in a subsequent by-election. The current announcement ensures a direct face-off between the two leaders in Bhawanipur. The Chief Minister expressed confidence that the TMC would secure more than 226 seats in the upcoming polls.

Key Candidates and Constituency Allocations

The TMC candidate list features a mix of veteran leaders and new faces across various districts. According to the official announcement, Jyotipriya Mallick has been fielded from Habra, while Trinankur will contest from Noapara. Chandrima Bhattacharya has been nominated for the Dum Dum North seat. Sayantika Banerjee will represent the party in Baranagar, and Aditi Munshi has been named for the Rajarhat-Gopalpur constituency. Other notable candidates include Sabyasachi Dutta from Barasat, Devdeep Purohit from Khardah, and Monturam Pakhira from Kakdwip. Bivas Sarkar and Biman Bandyopadhyay have been allocated the Baruipur East and Baruipur West seats, respectively. Firhad Hakim will contest from the Kolkata Port constituency, and Arup Biswas will represent the party in Tollygunge.

Alliance Strategy and Regional Seat Distribution

During the press conference, Mamata Banerjee detailed the party's alliance strategy, noting that three seats have been reserved for the faction led by Anit Thapa of the Gorkha Territorial Administration (GTA). The TMC won't field its own candidates in these specific constituencies, opting instead to support its ally, while highlighting the party's symbol, the 'Jora Phool' (twin flowers), Banerjee stated that it symbolizes victory. She called for a peaceful and democratic electoral process. Launching a verbal offensive against the BJP, she introduced slogans such as 'Boycott for BJP' and 'No Vote for BJP,' predicting that the opposition party would fail to cross the 50-seat mark in the assembly.

Allegations of Administrative Interference

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee raised serious concerns regarding administrative changes implemented following the election announcement. She criticized the Election Commission, referring to it as the 'BJP Commission,' and questioned the timing of official transfers. According to Banerjee, the removal of top officials, including the Chief Secretary and the Police Commissioner, before the formal notification of elections constitutes a violation of established norms. She alleged that a state of 'Super Emergency' has been imposed over the last four months, claiming that the central government is attempting to seize control of the state administration. She framed the election as a battle for Bengal's identity, emphasizing the slogan 'Ma, Mati, Manush'.

Detailed List of Regional Representatives

The candidate list further includes specific nominations for various crucial sectors. Lovely Maitra has been named for Sonarpur South, while Firdausu Begum will contest from Sonarpur North, while kunal Ghosh is the candidate for Beleghata, and Shreya Pandey has been nominated for Maniktala.
