South Africa defeated India by nine runs in the first ODI played at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow. The match, which started late due to rain, was reduced to 40 overs. After winning the toss, Indian captain Shikhar Dhawan decided to bowl first. Despite giving early shocks to the African team, Team India could not stop them on a low score.

Batting first, South Africa scored 249 runs in 40 overs for the loss of four wickets. David Miller remained unbeaten on 75 off 63 balls and Heinrich Klaasen 74 off 65 balls. In reply, Team India could score only 240 runs for the loss of eight wickets in 40 overs. Sanju Samson played an unbeaten innings of 86 runs in 63 balls. At the same time, the vice-captain Shreyas Iyer scored 50 runs.

With this win, South Africa have taken a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series. The next ODI will be played on October 9 at the JSCA International Stadium in Ranchi. The Indian team has landed in this series without senior players like regular captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya, Rishabh Pant, Suryakumar Yadav. All of them have gone to Australia for the T20 World Cup. The command of the team is in the hands of Shikhar Dhawan. At the same time, South Africa's team is playing this series with its full strength.
