Sunil Gavaskar said that it should never be forgotten that Kevin Pietersen led that team and he was the main person in the matter of this decision. Had Pietersen refused to come to India at that time, the tour would have ended there.

Former Indian cricket team veteran opener Sunil Gavaskar has appreciated the BCCI's offer to re-organize the canceled Manchester Test. He said that India should never forget England's help to return to complete the tour, which was halted due to the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks in 2008.

Indian team's assistant physio Yogesh Parmar was also found positive, after which the Indian team decided not to play the fifth match of the Test series. The BCCI and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) have later said that the match will be played again at a later date. Although this match will not be a part of this series, but nothing has been said about it officially.

Gavaskar said that yes, I think it would be the right move (planning to play the canceled Test again). Look, in India we should never forget what the England team did after the 26/11 terrorist attack in 2008. He came back to complete the series. He said that the England team could have said at that time that 'we don't feel safe'. We won't come back' but they didn't.

England team came back for test series

When terrorists attacked Mumbai, the visiting England team was playing an ODI against India in Cuttack on 26 November. Due to which the last 2 ODIs of the 7-match series were canceled. England decided to go home immediately, but later returned for a two-Test series, which India won 1–0. Gavaskar said the then captain Kevin Pietersen was instrumental in the decision to return England for the Test matches.

He said that it should never be forgotten that Kevin Pietersen led that team and he was the main person in the matter of this decision. Had Pietersen refused to come to India at that time, the tour would have ended there. Terming the BCCI's offer to play the match again at a later date, Gavaskar said that the canceled Test could be held next year after the Indian Premier League.
