Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, met the family of Dalit youth Hariom Valmiki in Fatehpur, Uttar Pradesh, on Friday. Following the meeting, Gandhi alleged that Valmiki's family members were being prevented from leaving their home, intimidated, and threatened. He urged the government not to protect the culprits and to ensure justice.
"The family didn't commit any crime, but they've been confined to their home and are being threatened. They're only seeking justice," Rahul Gandhi stated. He further claimed that the family's daughter needs an operation but isn't being allowed to go, as the government has confined them. Gandhi also highlighted the widespread atrocities against Dalits across the country.
Demand for Justice from CM Yogi
Rahul Gandhi called upon Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to ensure justice in the case and take stringent action against the perpetrators. "The CM shouldn't protect the criminals. The family spoke to me and revealed that government officials had threatened them, asking them to say on video that they didn't want to meet me," Gandhi said, assuring the victim's family of all possible help.
The Incident and Government Response
Hariom Valmiki was lynched on the night of October 2 near Jamunapur village in Unchahar, Raebareli, after being mistaken for a thief. The incident sparked widespread anger among locals. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had previously met Valmiki's family on October 11, assuring them of justice, a government job for a family member, a house under the Chief Minister's Residential Scheme, and other welfare benefits. Police have arrested 14 individuals, including the main accused, and suspended five police personnel for negligence.
Family's Initial Reluctance
Prior to Rahul Gandhi's arrival, Hariom's younger brother had reportedly refused to meet the Congress leader, stating satisfaction with the government and urging leaders not to politicize the issue. However, the Congress party attributed this stance to intimidation by the district administration.
