Rajya Sabha Elections 2022: Votes will be cast for 16 seats of Rajya Sabha today. It has seats from Haryana, Rajasthan, Karnataka and Maharashtra. The victory of the candidates in 12 out of 16 seats seems certain, while there is a close contest in 4 seats. In this, there is one seat each in all the four states.

The BJP is trying its best to win four additional seats as part of its efforts to consolidate its position in the Rajya Sabha. While the party is relying on independent candidates for this, it is also trying to take advantage of the differences within the Congress.

Independent candidates increased the troubles of Congress in Haryana and Rajasthan

The election has become interesting with independent candidates contesting in Haryana and Rajasthan. In fact, Congress's nomination of "outsider" leaders (leaders from outside the state) in these states has brought discontent among the party leaders, especially the state units, and the BJP wants to take advantage of this.

Under this, BJP has given full force in support of Kartikeya Sharma, son of influential leader Vinod Sharma and son-in-law of former Haryana Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kuldeep Sharma. Kartikeya Sharma is also said to be close to Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar. His mother is the mayor of Ambala.

It is also a coincidence that Vinod Sharma and Kuldeep Sharma are also considered close to former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda. Former Union Minister Ajay Maken is in the fray as the Congress candidate. It is believed that if he loses, Hooda's position in the Congress may weaken.

In Haryana's 90-member assembly, BJP has 40 MLAs while Congress has 31. BJP's ally JJP has 10 MLAs, while the Indian National Lok Dal and Haryana Lokhit Party have one each and seven independents. To ensure Maken's victory, the Congress will need to get the votes of all its 31 MLAs.

The Congress is also expected to get the votes of independent MLAs. Karthikeya Sharma is trying to get at least two votes from the Congress by breaking into it. If this happens, he can win with the help of BJP's second preference votes.

In Rajasthan, Congress has 108 votes and BJP has 71. In such a situation, Congress can easily win two and BJP one seat. The screw is stuck on the fourth seat. The Congress is trying to get three independents, three from the National Democratic Party, two each from the Communist Party of India and the Rashtriya Lok Dal to ensure the victory of its candidate Pramod Tiwari.

The Indian Tribal Party, with two MLAs, has decided not to participate in the elections. In Rajasthan, the BJP has fielded former state minister Ghanshyam Tiwari as its candidate.

What is the equation between Karnataka and Maharashtra

In Karnataka, both Congress and BJP are trying to get the Janata Dal (Secular) in their camp to win the fourth seat. The BJP has enough votes in the state to decide the victory of both its candidates Nirmala Sitharaman and actor-turned-politician Jaggesh.
