Mumbai. The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for Mumbai today. At the same time, an orange alert has been issued for the next 4-5 days. The Southwest Monsoon has knocked in Mumbai and its surrounding areas on Wednesday. Monsoon caused heavy rains in the morning in the country's financial capital and its suburbs, affecting normal life. Due to heavy rains, the city was waterlogged at many places. Local train services from Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminal (CSMT) to neighboring Thane and Vashi in Navi Mumbai have been suspended after some railway tracks were submerged due to waterlogging. The routes of some BEST buses have also been diverted due to rain.

The head of the Mumbai office of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Dr. Jayant Sarkar said, "Monsoon has knocked in Mumbai today." The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said that there is a possibility of waves of more than four meters in the Arabian Sea around noon. KS Hosalikar, head of climate research and services at IMD's SID, Pune tweeted, "Good news. The Southwest Monsoon has been announced to knock on Mumbai-Thane-Palghar today, June 9. Monsoon is passing through Valsad in Gujarat, Nagpur in Maharashtra and then Bhadrachalam Tuni today. Conditions are favorable for the arrival of monsoon in the rest of Maharashtra in the next two-three days.

Several parts of the city and suburbs received heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms in the morning. According to the IMD, Colaba observatory, representing South Mumbai, recorded 77.4 mm of rain in the last 24 hours while Santacruz observatory (suburbs) recorded 59.6 mm. Rain was recorded.

According to the BMC, the city, eastern suburbs and western suburbs recorded 48.49 mm, 66.99 mm and 48.99 mm respectively in the period of 24 hours till 8 am on Wednesday. Rain was recorded.

A BMC official said that 4.16 meters high waves are likely to rise at 11:43 am. IMD has forecast partly cloudy sky with moderate rain in Mumbai and suburbs. Heavy to very heavy rain is likely at some places.

Local train services were disrupted here due to the first heavy rains of this monsoon. Water logging has occurred between Sion and Chunabhatti stations of Central Railway (CR). Local train services on CR main line between CSMT and Kurla were suspended at 9.50 am. Later, train services on CSMT and Thane (Main Line) and CSMT and Vashi (Harbour Line) were suspended from 10.20 am, Central Railway Chief Spokesperson Shivaji Sutar said. "Trains are running smoothly on Trans-Harbour Line and BSU Lines. Shuttle services are also running from Thane to Karjat/Kasara and Vashi-Panvel.

Western Railway Chief Spokesperson Sumit Thakur said that there is no obstruction on the Western Railway route and its local train services are normal. He informed that water pumps are being used to deal with water logging.

The IMD had confirmed the onset of Southwest Monsoon in Maharashtra on Saturday. Monsoon had reached Harnai in coastal Ratnagiri district but despite favorable conditions, the monsoon seems to be progressing at a slow pace
