The political landscape of Western Uttar Pradesh is witnessing a significant shift as the friction between the Samajwadi Party (SP) and the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) reaches a new high. The latest flashpoint is the cancellation of a high-profile rally by Samajwadi Party President and former Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, which was scheduled to take place in Saharanpur on September 6. This development has triggered a war of words between the two former allies, with both sides offering vastly different explanations for the sudden change in plans.
The Official Reason: Weather and Rain Alerts
According to the Samajwadi Party, the decision to postpone the rally was purely logistical and driven by environmental factors. Chaudhary Rudrasen, the National General Secretary of the Samajwadi Party and the primary organizer of the event, officially announced the postponement on Wednesday. He stated that the Meteorological Department had issued an alert for heavy rainfall and inclement weather in the region for September 6. Given the potential risks and the difficulty of managing a large-scale gathering under such conditions, the party decided to put the event on hold. Rudrasen mentioned that a new date for the rally would be finalized after further consultations with Akhilesh Yadav, suggesting that the event might now take place in the last week of October or the first week of November.
The RLD Perspective: A Result of Public Protest
However, the Rashtriya Lok Dal has dismissed the weather excuse, claiming that the cancellation is a direct result of the political backlash Akhilesh Yadav is facing in Western Uttar Pradesh. The RLD asserts that the 36 Biradari (36 communities) of the region have united against the Samajwadi Party following Akhilesh Yadav's controversial "Chavanni to Rupee" (25 paise to a Rupee) comment directed at Jayant Chaudhary. This remark has been perceived as an insult to the Chaudhary family and the Jat community at large. RLD leaders claim that the atmosphere in Saharanpur was so hostile that the SP was forced to call off the event to avoid a public boycott.
Escalating Tensions and the Battle of Rallies
The tension between the two parties has been building up for some time. The Saharanpur event was supposed to be a major show of strength for both sides. Jayant Chaudhary's "Swabhimaan Rally" was scheduled for September 3, followed just three days later by Akhilesh Yadav's "Yuva Yoddha Sammelan" on September 6. This back-to-back scheduling had turned Saharanpur into a political battlefield. RLD National Spokesperson Rohit Agarwal launched a direct attack on the Samajwadi Party, stating that the Chaudhary family represents the honor and self-respect of the people. He warned that any derogatory remarks against the family would result in the Samajwadi Party being barred from entering Western Uttar Pradesh. The RLD maintains that the cancellation is a victory for the local sentiment and the unity of the 36 Biradari.
Looking Towards 2027
This political maneuvering is being seen as a precursor to the 2027 Assembly elections. While the RLD is working to consolidate its hold over the Jat voters in Western UP, the Samajwadi Party is trying to push its PDA (Pichda, Dalit, Alpsankhyak) formula. The cancellation of the rally has only added fuel to the ongoing debate about which party holds the real influence in the region, while despite the rally's postponement, Akhilesh Yadav is still expected to visit Saharanpur on September 2 to meet with Chaudhary Rudrasen at his residence.
