A major terrorist incident has been reported from Anantnag in Jammu and Kashmir, where a police officer lost his life in a targeted attack. According to the latest reports, a police party was attacked by terrorists near the Lal Chowk area, leading to the martyrdom of a constable. The attackers managed to flee the spot immediately after the incident, prompting security forces to launch an intensive search operation in the surrounding areas to track down the perpetrators.
Details of the Incident in Anantnag
Information received from PCR Anantnag indicates that the attack took place at approximately 12:35 PM. A group of unidentified terrorists opened fire on a police party stationed in the Kotwal Gali area of Lal Chowk, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Anantnag Police Station. The sudden firing caused immediate chaos in the busy market area as security personnel tried to retaliate and secure the perimeter.
Martyrdom of Head Constable Ashiq Hussain
In this violent encounter, Head Constable Ashiq Hussain, who belonged to the 3rd Battalion of the IR (Interim Reserve), sustained fatal injuries and died on the spot. Officials confirmed that Ashiq Hussain was deployed on security duty for the ongoing Amarnath Yatra. His sacrifice highlights the high-risk environment in which security forces operate to ensure the safety of pilgrims and local residents. Following the attack, the entire area was cordoned off by additional security reinforcements to prevent any further movement of the terrorists.
TRF Claims Responsibility for the Attack
The Resistance Front (TRF), an affiliate of the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), has claimed responsibility for this terrorist attack through a social media post, while the TRF was formed in the aftermath of the removal of Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir in August 2019. Security agencies view the TRF as a front or a proxy organization for the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, designed to give a local face to cross-border terrorism. The group has been involved in several targeted attacks in the region since its inception.
Significance of the Lal Chowk Area
Lal Chowk in Anantnag is known as one of the most crowded and commercially active areas in the district. On regular days, the location is packed with shoppers and local residents. Much like the famous Lal Chowk in Srinagar, this square in Anantnag has historically been a significant site for political meetings and rallies, while the choice of such a crowded location for an attack indicates an attempt by terrorists to create maximum panic among the civilian population.
Recent Security Challenges in the Region
This attack follows other recent security incidents in the Jammu and Kashmir region. A few days prior to this event, suspicious terrorists attempted an infiltration bid near the Line of Control (LoC) in the Tarkundi Forward area of Rajouri. This led to an exchange of fire between the Indian Army and the terrorists that lasted for about one and a half hours. On top of that, security forces recently achieved a significant success in Shopian, where they neutralized Zakir Ganai, a top commander of the Lashkar-e-Taiba, during a major anti-terrorist operation. The current search operation in Anantnag is part of the ongoing efforts to maintain peace and eliminate the remaining terrorist elements in the valley.
