A horrific and heart-wrenching road accident has come to light from the West Champaran (Bettiah) district of Bihar late on Friday night. The incident occurred on the Bettiah-Lauriya main road, specifically National Highway 727 (NH-727), between the areas of Baswariya and Parautola. A high-speed, uncontrolled bus plowed into a crowd of 18 people who were standing by the roadside watching an orchestra performance. This tragic accident resulted in the immediate death of 5 individuals, while 5 others have sustained serious injuries and are currently battling for their lives.
The Celebration That Turned Into A Tragedy
According to the information received, a Chhatihar ceremony was being organized on Friday at the residence of Dharmendra Dubey, located right next to NH-727. The celebration was held to mark the birth of a child in the family. While the house was filled with an atmosphere of joy and happiness, an orchestra program was being held outside on the roadside. A large number of local villagers and relatives had gathered by the side of the road to enjoy the music and dance performances. The celebration was in full swing when the tragedy struck.
The Moment of the Horrific Collision
At approximately 12:45 AM late at night, a vehicle known as the Shahi Bus, which was traveling from Gorakhpur towards Bettiah, suddenly lost control. The bus veered off the main carriage way and crashed directly into the innocent crowd standing by the roadside. Within a matter of seconds, the atmosphere of celebration and music was replaced by screams of pain and loud cries for help. The impact was so severe that the victims had no time to react or move out of the way.
Overtaking Competition and High Speed
Eyewitnesses present at the scene provided chilling details of how the accident unfolded. They reported that at the time of the incident, a truck loaded with gas cylinders was coming from the direction of Bettiah, while simultaneously, the Shahi Bus was approaching from the Lauriya side at an extremely high speed. A dangerous competition to overtake each other allegedly broke out between the two heavy vehicles, while in this reckless pursuit of speed and overtaking, the bus driver completely lost control over the vehicle. The uncontrolled bus then proceeded to mow down the people standing on the side of the road before coming to a halt.
Loss of Lives and Family Devastation
The scale of the accident was so immense that two people died on the spot. Three other victims succumbed to their injuries while being rushed to the hospital or during the course of their treatment. The deceased have been identified as Sanjay Mahto, Bhola Dubey, Bahadur Mahto, Devendra Dubey, and Chhangur Ram. The loss of these individuals has left their families devastated in a single stroke of misfortune. The house that was echoing with traditional 'Sohar' and 'Badhaiya' songs just moments ago is now filled with the sounds of mourning and inconsolable grief.
Current Status and Police Investigation
Apart from the deceased, 5 other people who were injured in the accident are currently undergoing treatment at the hospital. Their condition is reported to be serious. Upon receiving news of the accident, the local police reached the spot immediately. They've taken custody of the bodies for further legal proceedings and post-mortem examinations, while the authorities are currently investigating the matter and looking into the negligence of the bus driver. The local community remains in a state of shock as they process the magnitude of this tragedy that turned a festive night into a nightmare.
