A major and significant political transformation has unfolded in Bihar politics in the wake of the recent legislative council election results. The strength of the Bharatiya Janata Party, commonly known as the BJP, in the Bihar Legislative Council has received a notable boost as two newly elected independent MLCs officially joined the party. Banshidhar Brijwasi, who secured an independent victory from the Tirhut Graduates constituency for the second consecutive time, and Dr Rahul Raj, who won an election for the very first time from the Saran Teachers constituency, joined the BJP on Saturday. Both leaders formally accepted the party membership in the presence of the Bihar BJP state in-charge. Speculations had been rife ever since the election results were declared, and both leaders had already given clear indications of joining the BJP.
With this major political development, the total number of newly elected BJP MLCs has now increased to four. Dr Rahul Raj, who was elected from the Saran Teachers seat, has historically been a dedicated member of the BJP itself. However, rebelling against the party dynamics ahead of the polls, he contested the election independently, while following his remarkable electoral victory, he has once again returned to the BJP fold. On the other hand, Banshidhar Brijwasi, who won the election from the Tirhut Graduates seat, has also officially become a part of the BJP family. Banshidhar Brijwasi was previously serving as an MLC from the very same Tirhut Graduates constituency. In the latest election, he secured his victory by defeating JDU candidate Abhishek Jha.
An interesting aspect of these electoral battles is that official candidates of the Janata Dal United, known as JDU, were fielded from both seats on behalf of the NDA alliance. In the Saran Teachers constituency, Dr Rahul Raj defeated JDU candidate Anand Pushkar, whereas in the Tirhut Graduates constituency, Banshidhar Brijwasi handed a decisive defeat to Abhishek Jha. Following the joining of these two prominent leaders into the BJP, the party has made a strong claim that out of the total eight seats, four seats now securely rest in its kitty, while the ally JDU has been left with only a single seat.
Banshidhar Brijwasi Defeated JDU Candidate by Fighting Independently
Banshidhar Brijwasi has earned a distinctive identity across the political and social circles of Bihar as a prominent leader who has consistently raised his voice for the rights of teachers. He has played an active and decisive role in numerous state-wide agitations and protests organized over the pressing demands and grievances of teachers. He has also served as the state president of the Parivartan-kari Prarambhik Shikshak Sangh, Bihar, a major association representing educators, while this strong grassroots connection and popularity among teachers proved to be immensely helpful during his electoral campaign.
Banshidhar Brijwasi entered the electoral fray from the Tirhut Graduates constituency purely as an independent candidate without the formal backing of any major political party. He registered a resounding victory by defeating official JDU candidate Abhishek Jha by a considerable margin. Winning this election as an independent candidate for the second consecutive time and subsequently joining the Bharatiya Janata Party right after is being regarded as a highly crucial political development in the prevailing political landscape of Bihar.
Dr Rahul Raj Contested Election First Time and Secured Direct Victory
Dr Rahul Raj contested the MLC election for the very first time in his political career from the Saran Teachers constituency and achieved a historic victory on his maiden attempt. He successfully defeated JDU candidate Anand Pushkar in the contest. Discussing his educational credentials, Dr Rahul Raj holds a PhD degree and is currently serving as an associate professor at VIP College, while alongside his active involvement in the academic sector, he's also engaged in running schools and colleges, while pursuing other business ventures, establishing himself as a successful entrepreneur and academician.
A resident of Mukreda village under the Rivilganj block of Saran district, Dr Rahul Raj is the son of Bipin Singh. His family possesses a strong political background. Both his family and Dr Rahul Raj himself have previously been associated with political organizations, during which he has served as an esteemed member of the BJP state executive committee and also as the block pramukh of Rivilganj. However, for this specific legislative council election, he consciously decided to contest the polls as an independent candidate and successfully managed to secure a victory from the electorate, following which he has made a homecoming to his original political party.
