The threat to vessels in the Persian Gulf continues to escalate as a cargo ship was attacked near the coast of Qatar on Sunday. According to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), the vessel was targeted by an unknown weapon or projectile, which resulted in a fire breaking out on board. The agency confirmed that the fire was subsequently brought under control and, fortunately, no injuries were reported among the crew members during the incident.

Details of the Attack and UKMTO Report

The attack took place approximately 43 km northeast of Doha, the capital of Qatar. The ship was navigating through the maritime routes of the Persian Gulf when it was struck. While the fire caused initial alarm, the crew managed to extinguish it quickly. The UKMTO has been monitoring the situation closely, noting that the vessel and its crew are now safe, although the identity of the attackers remains unknown.

US-Iran Tensions and Threats of Retaliation

Despite a ceasefire being in place between the United States and Iran, tensions in the region remain high. This latest incident follows a series of attacks on vessels in the Persian Gulf over the past week. Recently, the US targeted two Iranian oil tankers, alleging they were attempting to bypass the American blockade on Iranian ports. In response, Iran's Revolutionary Guard issued a stern warning, stating that any further attacks on its tankers or commercial vessels would lead to significant strikes against US military bases and enemy ships.

Key Highlights and Statistics

Previous Incidents Involving Indian and Chinese Vessels

This isn't an isolated event in the volatile region. On April 8, a wooden Indian vessel caught fire near the Strait of Hormuz while carrying 18 Indian crew members. That incident resulted in the death of one sailor and left four others with burn injuries. The remaining 17 crew members were rescued by a passing vessel, and the injured were treated in Dubai. The exact cause of that fire remains unclear.

Also, a Chinese oil tanker named 'JV Innovation,' flying the flag of the Marshall Islands, was also attacked recently. The vessel caught fire, and its chief engineer stated that the perpetrators of the attack have not yet been identified. The ship had 22 crew members from China, Myanmar, and Indonesia, all of whom were reportedly shaken by the assault as maritime security in the region continues to deteriorate.
