A major maritime accident occurred near the Strait of Hormuz on Friday when a wooden cargo vessel caught fire and subsequently capsized. The tragic incident resulted in the death of one Indian sailor, while 17 other Indian crew members were successfully rescued. There were a total of 18 Indian crew members on board the vessel at the time of the accident. According to government sources, a nearby ship immediately intervened to provide assistance, managing to save 17 of the crew members.

Rescue Operations and Medical Assistance

Following the rescue, the 17 survivors were brought to safety. The four Indian sailors who sustained injuries during the incident were transported to Dubai for medical treatment. Their condition is currently reported to be stable and out of danger. Officials from the Indian Consulate in Dubai have met with the rescued sailors and are providing all necessary support. The vessel involved was a wooden dhow carrying general cargo when the fire broke out, leading to its capsizing.

Strategic Importance of the Strait of Hormuz

The accident took place near the Strait of Hormuz, which is recognized as one of the world's most critical maritime passages. This route is vital for global energy security, as a significant portion of the world's oil supply passes through it. The incident comes at a time of heightened geopolitical tensions in the region, particularly between the United States and Iran. An investigation is currently underway to determine the exact cause of the fire on the wooden cargo ship.

Attack on Chinese Tanker JV Innovation

In a separate development near the Strait of Hormuz, a Chinese oil tanker named JV Innovation was reportedly attacked, causing increased fear and tension among maritime workers, while according to Chinese media reports, this is considered the first major attack on a Chinese oil tanker since the onset of the Iran conflict. The JV Innovation is a large oil and chemical tanker flying the flag of the Marshall Islands. The vessel, which is approximately 173 meters long and was built in 2004, sent out distress signals on Monday reporting a fire on its deck.

Crew Safety and Investigation Details

The ship's Chief Engineer, Liu, stated that it remains unclear who was responsible for the attack or whether it was an intentional act or an accident. He noted that the ship was stationary at the time, and the crew didn't expect any such incident. There were 22 people on board the tanker, including more than 10 Chinese nationals, with the remaining crew members hailing from Myanmar and Indonesia. While no injuries were reported in this specific incident, the crew members are reportedly in a state of shock.

Authorities are continuing their investigation into both incidents to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the fire and the reported attack on the Chinese vessel.
