A massive wave of protests has erupted across India against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, with political parties and various organizations taking to the streets from Delhi to Mumbai. The INDIA block has officially launched its 'Save Democracy March' today, targeting issues such as alleged vote theft and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process. This nationwide movement is designed to reach the offices of District Magistrates in every district across the country, signaling a coordinated effort by the opposition to challenge the current functioning of the Election Commission.

Protests in the National Capital

In Delhi, the focal point of the agitation is Jantar Mantar, where a significant demonstration is scheduled to begin at 11 AM. High-profile figures including RJD MP Manoj Jha and noted lawyer Prashant Bhushan are expected to participate alongside members of AISA. Reports suggest that approximately 5000 people are likely to gather for this protest. However, the Delhi Police has officially denied permission for the demonstration at Jantar Mantar, while in response to the potential influx of protesters, the police have established a multi-layered security cordon. Barricades have been placed on all routes leading to Jantar Mantar, and additional police personnel have been deployed at various entry and exit points to maintain order and prevent any untoward incidents.

Tension in Mumbai and CJP's Stand

In Mumbai, the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) has taken a firm stand against the Chief Election Commissioner. The Mumbai Police has refused to grant permission for the CJP's protest at Chhatrapati Shivaji Park. Authorities have stated that Azad Maidan is the only authorized location for demonstrations in Mumbai and no protests can occur elsewhere. Originally, the CJP intended to hold its protest at Shivaji Park on 2 October, coinciding with Gandhi Jayanti. Following the denial of permission, the CJP has announced a 'Jail Bharo Andolan' (Fill the Jails Movement). This protest has received support from Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray.

Key Demands of the Protesters

Also, the party is demanding the restoration of the voter list as it stood in January 2025. The CJP alleges that there are serious concerns regarding the Election Commission's methodology and the process of altering voter lists. This nationwide movement, starting from Mumbai, is a direct response to these grievances.

Future Course of Action

The agitation is set to intensify in the coming days. Starting from 4 October, Shiv Sena (UBT) and Raj Thackeray's Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) are scheduled to begin their own series of protests. Meanwhile, the security situation in New Delhi remains tight. Police sources indicate that they're keeping a close watch on sensitive areas and routes surrounding Jantar Mantar to ensure that the gathering of 4 to 5000 people doesn't lead to a breach of peace.
