Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma conducted a surprise inspection of the Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital in Jaipur on Saturday, 6 June. The visit took place as the Chief Minister was returning from his tour of Bhilwara. During this unexpected visit, the Chief Minister took stock of the medical facilities and interacted directly with the patients to understand their grievances and the quality of care being provided at the state's premier medical institution. The Chief Minister also personally inspected the Outpatient Department (OPD) to evaluate the operational efficiency of the hospital during peak hours.
Action Against Absenteeism
During the inspection of the OPD, Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma expressed strong displeasure over the absence of several medical professionals. It was reported that Dr. Om Meel was found absent from duty during the designated OPD hours, while taking a serious view of this negligence, the Chief Minister's Office has issued instructions to serve a show-cause notice to the concerned doctor. This move signals a strict stance by the state government against any laxity in healthcare services, emphasizing that doctors must be available to serve the public during their scheduled shifts.
Directives for Patient Assistance and Monitoring
The Chief Minister issued several instructions aimed at improving the patient experience at the hospital. He directed the administration to strengthen the system for guiding patients from the registration counters to the relevant departments and laboratories for tests. To ensure the effectiveness of this system, he ordered regular monitoring and the maintenance of a daily record of the number of patients assisted. He emphasized that the impact of these assistance measures must be evaluated periodically to ensure that patients don't face unnecessary hurdles while seeking treatment.
Infrastructure and Departmental Reorganization
To address the issue of overcrowding, the Chief Minister gave specific directions to control the rush in the OPD area to prevent inconvenience to the public, while a significant directive was issued regarding the Cardiology block; the Chief Minister has requested a specific timeline for transferring the Cardiology block out of the main OPD area. Also, he instructed the hospital management to present a comprehensive plan for the utilization of the rooms that will be vacated once the Cardiology department is shifted. In another move to enhance patient convenience, he directed that a plan be developed to establish the Orthopedic department and all essential diagnostic facilities in close proximity to the OPD area.
Monitoring of Renovation and Maintenance Works
Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma also reviewed the ongoing technical and structural works within the hospital premises, while he issued instructions for the regular and effective monitoring of projects such as the installation of the Central Air Conditioning system and other repair and renovation works. He stressed that these projects must be completed within the stipulated timeframes to ensure that the hospital's infrastructure supports high-quality medical care without any technical disruptions.
