Luggage Crisis at Glasgow
The 22 member Indian boxing team recently completed their training camp in Belfast and traveled to Glasgow for the main event. Upon arrival, they discovered that nearly half of their luggage had been left behind at the Belfast airport, while this missing baggage contains essential items required for the athletes' preparation and participation. Specifically, the lost bags include the training kits necessary for daily practice sessions and the official ceremonial dresses intended for the opening ceremony scheduled for Thursday. The loss of these items has put the athletes in a difficult position as they prepare for the international stage.
Reason for the Logistical Failure
According to members of the Indian contingent, the primary reason for this mishap was the size of the aircraft used for the flight between Belfast and Glasgow. The plane was reportedly too small to accommodate the entire volume of luggage belonging to the 22 member squad. Consequently, a significant portion of the gear couldn't be loaded onto the flight. The individuals whose belongings are currently missing include prominent names such as World Champion Jasmine Lamboria, Sakshi Chaudhary, Parveen Hooda, Jadumani Singh, and Kapil Pokhariya. On top of that, the men's head coach, C. Kuttappa, is also among those whose luggage didn't arrive in Glasgow.
A Pattern of Negligence
This incident is particularly frustrating for the team management as it marks the second time such negligence has occurred within a single month. Earlier in July, when the boxing squad was traveling from Doha to Belfast, a similar error by the airlines resulted in logistical issues. The repetition of such mistakes has raised concerns about the handling of the national team's equipment during critical travel periods. Also, the team management has highlighted another significant problem regarding accommodation. Mandakini Chanu, the coach for the women's boxing team, has not been provided a room in the same hotel where the rest of the boxers are staying, while this separation is creating difficulties in maintaining coordination between the coach and the athletes during these final days of preparation.
Upcoming Competition Schedule
The boxing matches at the Commonwealth Games are set to begin on Friday, July 24. With the competition date fast approaching, the Indian contingent is hopeful that their missing luggage will be safely delivered to Glasgow before their training and final preparations intensify.
